How much to tune up my 1971 9.5hp?

I plan to take a shot at tuning up this outboard myself, but wanted to know how much I would expect to pay to have this 71' 9.5 serviced at a shop. I need new points, plugs, condensors, impellor and a general tune up (carb adjust). I do not believe it needs a carb overhaul. This motor has been idle for several years and would like someone to give it a good once over. What could I expect to pay?

$150-200 for parts including coils and lower unit lube. I have no idea what a shop would charge, but I'd expect to be billed for 3 hours labour plus misc shop and enviro fees. It seems pretty standard to hear about $500CDN for a complete tune-up including coils here in Southern Ontario. However, you can save a lot of money if you do it yourself. It is very simple to do. Buy an OEM manual, get started and ask us questions if you get stuck.

I agree. The OEM manual will cost you 30 to 50 bucks, but will save you hundreds in the long run, along with this great, free forum. Basic tool kit and an afternoon will get you going strong for the summer. Check ebay for an original manual, or try outboardbooks.com for a reprint.

Thanks for the info - here's the rest of the story. The motor is in storage in another state. It has been sitting idle for years but was used once last fall. The motor belongs to our family and I have been told it ran fine last time it was out. Maintenance over the years has not been that extensive and I do not believe the impellor has ever been changed. I am going to pick it up this spring and we intend to run the motor at that time, but I will not have had time to change the impellor by then. I could have a shop handle the tune up and impellor change, but would prefer to do it myself and save the $. Im a little nervous about running it without at least an impellor change based on what I read in these posts. I decided to keep an eye on the pee hole and make sure I've got some flow. Then do a complete tune when I get it back home.

That sounds like a reasonable plan to me. Keep a sharp eye out for proper cooling.

Probably just need to clean the points and change the impeller and lower unit oil. Probably $30-40 if you do it yourself.

It really doesnt take that long to change the impeller before you run it. Im not saying this is absolute, but it is possible that the impeller is cracked and split from both sitting idle, and age, and when run will crumble, sending chunks of rubber into the cooling system, causing future cooling water restrictions in the future. Just something to be aware of. I admit I am a bit anal when it comes to maintainence on the water pump, and there are guys out there that let it go years without changing. Question is, Do ya feel lucky, well do ya?? :)

If you run the motor a long time in a bucket, the impeller will be saturated with oil, which will destroy the impeller if it is stored that way. If the impeller is clean and free of solvents and oil, it should last for years. The OEM impellers are best. The kits are better now as well.

The original fuel lines on the engine were not alcohol resistant and the new fuels will break them down and screw up the carburetors. If you have the time, change them out. It is easy to do and worth the time.

Captain suggests the impellor should be kept clean and free of oils and solvents. My manual states, when installing the impellor to "Oil impellor and slip down the driveshaft and over the pin." I assume the oil is to help slip the blades in the housing. So is oil a good or bad thing?

Ezeke is referring to running the motor is a bucket I believe. Since the spent cooling water is recycled back into the bucket, then again through the water pump, it gets warmer and warmer,as it cycles, and oil builds up in it. Oiling the fins of the impeller is reccomended in all of my manuals to ease in start up, and is fine as per OEM.

Re: How much to tune up my 1971 9.5hp?

A lot of people have used liquid soap to install impellers just to avoid the use of the oils. In either event, most of the time the pump is tested at the time of the installation, so whatever you use should be washed away quickly.

From what I have read, rubber is basically a hydrocarbon, ergo; any hydrocarbon liquid dissolves into it well. The hydrocarbon liquid will then either plasticize or dissolve. The oils which don’t finish dissolving rubber will plasticize. In either case the impeller would be short-lived.

Getting back on topic, you probably will need at least 3 hours of work.My shop rate is $80.00.Parts are additional.

You will need to do the carb, and the water pump needs at least an impeller. If the spark is strong,I woudn't even go there.Until needed.

You said it st several years.
