Friend bought an 89 PRO LINE with an OMC sea drive. I dont know why as it is up for sale after one trip. It is a 3 ltr. supposidly 1989. model nbr 30 APRARF, s/n G or Q 02286020. No books, manual, clue about this thing. I got involved as he thought the overheat alarm was going off in minutes after starting, water pump no help, and he found a primer in the oil line which pumping it seemed to correct the problem.
Anyway, it is ideling at 1400 rpm and thats when the trouble started. He and a friend, not me I just stood back and watched, turned every adjustment screw they could find to try to idle it back. I did get him to disconnect the throttle cable before he, they, attempted the adjustment, but I got to tell you everything is out of wack now. After they bottomed out the 2 big link/sync bolts I convinced them to stop and let me try to get some help. When I left they were talking how they tune FARMALL and FURGERSONS tractors!! Really, I am not making this up. So can anyone direct me to a site that might have info on these engines?
Also if you are familiar, I am not, tell me what the plastic handle and lock nut that sticks out from under the flywheel does. I know it moves the ignition plate , invites a lot of adjustment, which was done from stop to stop and had no effect on the motor. And does the fuel pump also pump the oil and mix it? What does the 3 wires on the fuel pump do? What is the switch that is connected to the fuel line between the filter and pump do? It is just below the starter on the feed side of the fuel, 2 wires to it.
Sure would appreciate any information you would come up with. I like to have an idea of what I am looking at before I make suggestions. Honest, I didnt touch a thing, just stood back and watched. Sure you have all been there. thanks FRED

Thankyou for the leads to those sights. However books on that set up will not be necessary as somehow he sold the thing yesterday. Said it ran great and only problem was a spun prop hub, dont need a book to fix that.
Interesting set up, only the second one I have seen. Must have been a good idea at the time. Powerhead looked impressive but all that iron to hang the thing, what were they thinking? Maby they wanted to mount one of those V-8s that I once saw. Older RUDES and JOHNSONS are becoming rare around here and it looks like SUZUKI is outselling them by a long shot on new motors.
When researching for a manual on the set up, was it called a SEA DRIVE or STERN DRIVE ? Found a listing for stern drive but site would not let me go past the listing. regards FRED

The adjustment knob hooked to the timer base is how you adjust the idle.

My suggestion would be to get an OE service manual and follow the steps for sync-n-link. Most likely they have a carb or bank of carb butterflies slightly open.

That model is from the 1989 sales year.

there was the omc stearn drive,, inboard outboard, and the seadrive, basically and outboard withmods, mounted on a stearn bracket. neither one is still in production, and parts are scarce.

Re: 89 OMC sea drive help

I have a pair of seadrives and had them for 12 years with no problems with the seadrive assembly.
