Hey,
I have this motor and never did have the original dipstick.
It's a 1986 Mercruiser MIE 340 (7.4 or 454). The oil pan is a heavy cast aluminum. This spring I plan on doing a few changes (heads and cam) so I can get the motor dry. As you can see it has a oil filter by pass so how many quarts of oil should I start off with?

8 quarts plus the filter.

Is that 8qts and fill the filter or is that 8qts with the filter? And not to question but are you sure it will take 8qts? Seems a little high but that's why I am asking.
Thanks

That is an 8 quart pan. 8 quarts go in the pan.......set the dipstick mark with 8 quarts in the pan, then put oil in the filter, start and run the engine, stop the engine and check and add oil as necessary to bring up to the mark you made.
