Re: Mental boating!

:D:D:D probably!

This is the description with it

Here's the latest drug runner from some european nuts.

This thing belts across the english channel 3 times per week and was just a blur on the radar of the British coast guard.

They were so blown away by the speed of the thing that they bought in a specialised chopper and had to attempt to LAND the chopper on the boat at high speed to get them to stop....

What was on board...... 300kgs of pure cocaine!

Just to let you know, i don't beleive the bit about it landing on it but must have been weird on radar or whatever they use to locate boats in sea these days

Re: Mental boating!

Just a thought, the only reason they had the cocaine is to pay the fuel bill! :D:D

They must drink fuel like pouring over the side....with a big pump!

Re: Mental boating!

I doubt it, but story has it the drug runner was caught in the English channel or near Scotland, my source was unsure, however, the drug enforcement agency (Coast Guard ??) had a heck of a time catching them, even with the assistance of helicopters.

Re: Mental boating!

more info found!

Commentary:
This email forward includes a photograph of a large rigid inflatable boat (RIB) that is powered by eight 250 hp outboard motors. The message claims that the vessel was used to smuggle drugs across the English Channel three times per week until it was captured by a British coast guard helicopter with 300kg of cocaine on board.

Powerful RIB's like the one pictured are real. UK company Crompton Marine manufactures RIBs in a variety of sizes and engine configurations including a 20 meter model powered by eight 250 CV Yamaha outboard motors. The specifications of this model correspond with the boat shown in the photograph.

Moreover, recent criminal proceedings indicate that these vessels may have been designed specifically to meet the requirements of drug smugglers. The current owner of Crompton Marine, Ian Rush, has been accused of supplying the boats for use in drug related crimes. Rush's partners, Richard Davison, and Ellen George were arrested on similar charges in 2004. A January 2007 BBC news article includes the following quote from case prosecutor Simon Draycott:

"The ribs (rigid inflatable boats) were built, sold and transported to southern Spain, North Africa and Morocco.

"Mr Davison, Ms George and Mr Rush knew those buying the boats wanted them for one reason, to transport drugs and contraband from North Africa to southern Spain.

"They also knew that the money used to pay for the boat was coming from proceeds of crime."

Another news article in the UK's Daily Mail provides further information about the case:

Managing director Davison, 39, and his partner George, 41, were suspected of making secret cash deals on boats costing up to ?350,000, each with eight 250-horsepower engines strapped to the back.

Ranging between 30ft and 60ft long and capable of producing 60 knots (about 70mph) at sea, they could out-run any pursuers. Similar sized boats normally have one or two outboard motors.

Thus, there seems little doubt that boats like the one pictured were used in illicit drug related activities. However, I could find no reports that confirm the English Channel drug smuggling incident described in the message. Reports of large drug busts are regularly featured in the news media. It is unlikely that a 300kg cocaine haul found in one of the RIB's that are central to a widely reported court case would not have made headlines. Also, details of the court case reveal that, although the inflatable drug boats were made in the UK, they were destined for drug smuggling operations between north Africa and southern Spain.

Given the lack of any collaborating evidence, it seems reasonable to conclude that, although the boat shown in the photograph may well have been used to smuggle drugs, the description of the drug bust included in the message may be false or inaccurate.

Re: Mental boating!

The photo was taken in the Mediterranean. It's an 18m DDC. It wasn't anything to do with running across the English Channel-it was used to cross from Morocco to Gib/Spain.

We don't have Coastguard helicopters.

Crompton Marine were closed down by Customs and Excise and sold off at auction (guess who was bidding-I've got half of their airtools in my garage. Missed out on three surface drives though!). Their website however is still online-it's cromptonmarine.com if you want to see some serious kit.

Here's one of the beasts in action:-

Re: Mental boating!

For steering, do you think they throttle up the engines on the opposite side of where they're turning? Those things look very close to each other IMHO...

Re: Mental boating!

The website shows the largest as carrying 20,000 liters or 5,280 gallons of fuel. Must be good money in drugs, until you get caught. Imagine the cost of a tune up? Everything times 8, ouch. I wonder what they make the transom out of to take the 2,000 horsepower.

Yes-maybe... It took 2 trials to convict them so it's dubious if they knew what they were going to be used for(of course, conjecture says what else do you use it for-but conjecture isn't proof). They were also supplying boats to the Swedish Navy and the US Navy.

Snopes is very inaccurate on them though. There wouldn't be any point in using one of these for 300kgs of Cocaine. 2 tonnes maybe-the payload is several tonnes. The outboards are at different heights to follow the hull profile underwater-they are all 25" shafts.

Some of the moulds were bought by Madeira Ribs ( m-ribs.com) and they are still in use.

Re: Mental boating!

I can't imagine that they could outrun 25mm shells...

Or even a tyco for that matter, so why do this?

I know, there's plenty of money in drug trafficing. I have to wonder though, wouldn't it be cheaper to produce drugs locally than to import them?

Re: Mental boating!

They've got to get it in range 1st-and be certain that it's not going to stop or that it's carrying drugs. There's been at least one case where the enforcers have been over zealous and shot out the engines on pleasure boats.

Boats like this are used for fast legitimate cargo shipment in Europe too-for time critical things like newspapers from Denmark to Norway and emergency oil rig resupplying in the North Sea when the weather is too bad to fly.

Re: Mental boating!

A little off the subject, but about 5 1/2 years ago my wife and I were out boating the San Juan Islands. Earlier that day we noticed a small US Navy Cruiser ?? 200'+ ship out in the sound. Not uncommon but you always stop and look for a moment.

Well, we had moored up to a buoy in the bay near a favorite island (west side of Sucia Island) and decided to take an afternoon nap. Couple hours later I pop my head up and see a large black Zodiac looking thing approaching. Yep, you guessed it, she was filled with black masked navy boys holding rifles and a couple of Coasties. After some intense moments they lowered their masks and smiled for the camera but that scared the #%& out of me. Last time I name a boat the Runaway.

Turns out the 9-11 ordeal had gotten everybody nervous and it was getting common for them to check boats near the US/Canada border. Interesting thing, however, just before going down for our nap I had noticed an suspicious boat cut through our bay as if they were trying to evade being noticed. Of course I reported what I had seen to the gentleman holding guns, so they didn't stick around long to chat.

That was my question! I was wondering how that would work with engines at various heights.

As much fun as it would be to ride one, I think I'll to my Merc 3.0L, thank you very much.

Re: Mental boating!

With that many engines at the back, how do one keep the front of the boat from coming out of the water. Also do they have only 1 throttle to control all the engine and what are the configuration for the turn at the prop?? C-CC-C-CC etc...or half and half??

Re: Mental boating!

8 throttles. 15 tonnes of fuel and several tonnes of Columbian Marching Powder will keep the bow down :D
