johnson 50 hp shift throttle control

Im brand new at this...bought a boat an old one with an old johnson 50hp on it..

I can not figure out the cables....

I need help...I am mechanically inclined being a mechanic...but i cant figre it out

if anyone know this setup it would be great if you can help....

right now the idle is high if i back the control up it goes down from middle...

it is always in forward gear... its cable throttle and shift

Could you post the year, or even better the model number?

umm dont know...it has solenoid choke...off the key.....and it looks to be from the 80's

Check for a plate on the mounting bracket (see attached photo) it will give you model and serial number so we can help you better

That would be the serial number. We need a model number for the year. It will look something like J50ELCSA. If not on the stern plate as mentioned, look for the welch plug. It will be about the size of a quarter, and on the rear top of the motor. Could you also clarify what information you are looking for?

that number is on the quarter sized metal round plate on the motor and is on the metal tag on the outside....it is the only numbers on my motor i searched for an hour

What cables are giving you trouble? What troubleshooting are you trying to do?

the throttle cable and shift cable are easy to move ....

but I have no clue how to adjust the throttle with the shift at the motor......

I just want to know if there is a trick to it....should it be easy....

I tried just about everything......

it stays in forward.....I dont know where to start the adjustment....

any help will be awesome.......I have adjusted the to barrel threaded things both ways...... I just cant figure it out

The cover was off...

Its a 1980 something mercury 50hp.....Im a retard
