The old Radioshack weather alert Radio is gettin' a little scratchy, plus I'm not sure if the alerting function is truly functional, so it seems to be time for an upgrade.

I notice that some (more expensive) types use county codes, etc. for configuration, so it's not as simple as the old days.

How some input as to brands, features, etc., for the newer stuff. What to look for.

The wife worries about tornados, so I may need a model that will actually keep looking out the window every 5 minutes ;)

Re: Weather Alert Radio

In my area it's simple. I have a GE clock radio/weather alert radio model
7-4A45A. It has a switch on the back with about 6 positions. You just switch between them until you get the strongest one for your area. When there is a storm the NWA sets off a tone that sets off a annoying alarm and flashing light on the radio. Then you push a button on the top to hears what they have to say. Works every time. Has a battery back up and even goes off during a power failure. Although the annoying warning and flashing light is slower.Once a week on Wednesdays the local cops run a test tone from the jail /police station.

Re: Weather Alert Radio

I have the bottom of the line Midland Weather Alert Radio (I think it was about $30) and I'm happy with it. Amazon had the best price when I got it about a year ago.

It does go off every time there is a thunderstorm which is a little annoying but I guess it's better than not knowing if something major was about to happen.

If I were to do it over again, I think I'd spend the couple of extra bucks to have the Weather Alert/FM radio combo. That way, I would replace the FM radio in our bathroom with the Weather Alert/FM radio to have one less device hanging around.
