I have an older Suzuki 150hp on a 5.2 meter hull, at idle it almost stops but after warming up seems to idle reasonably well,however when you go to accellerate,nearly always stalls,but when it does keep going it goes real well,I have found that after getting the boat to keep idling and then you want to accellerate,have someone squeeze thepriming bulb and the motor seems to respond,do I have too low and idle or do I have a too lean motor,or something else

we need more info.

year motor
DT?

i asume you have a 2 stroke carburated engine.

the way you describe the problem it sounds to me you have a weak fuel pump.

I am with reeldutch, at a minimum it sounds like a weak fuel pump, is this 150 carbed or EFI ?

Re: Suzuki 150hp start off problems

Thanks for the quick response,I do have some more info,the motor is DT150 and serial number is 15001 601374,which I think makes it a 1986 model,I increased the idle RPM's to see weather or not that may help but it only restricted my ability to select forward or reverse.I dropped the idle back,and with the boat out of the water I tested it again,put into forward and brought up the rev"s,no problems at all,put it into reverse, same thing absolutely faultless,will put it back in the water and test again,but can"t understand what difference being in the water would make,any clues from anyone
Regards,
Gavin

by being in the water you create a "load" many times engines will idle fine on land on muffs, but in water act totaly different, backpressure ect. i am going w/ the bad fuel pump theory, also check fuel pick up in tank, could be clogged w/debris;

If it's a carby model, i'd say you've got blocked pilot jets (the really small jet).
If it's not the fuel pump, that's the next thing to check.
the pilot jet controls about the first 1/8th of throttle (where you're stalling)
see how you go with the fuel pump. The pilot jets are even more likely to be blocked if the engine has been out of use for a while.
