Brainteaser #1: A shop sells BAUBLES for 50 cents, CANDLES for 650 cents, and PUDDINGS for 1001 cents. What do SLEIGHS cost?

(this IS actually solvable for those of you that may be tempted to believe otherwise)

Brainteaser #2: A car is travels at 21 mph, a lorry travels at 37 mph and a van travels at 36 mph. How fast is a train?

(still solvable)

Well, I can tell you on at least one of them, the alphabet has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's all math. ;)

Re: The toughest brain teaser ever...

I'll have an update post on the proj later today (with pics). Been working on the trailer lately just for a change of pace and because the winch was really bothering me, with sharp corners that woulc scratch me all up every other time I walked around the bow. Besides that, I've totally given up the notion of getting her out on the water this year. The transom mistake did that in.

You only got kicked out of bed for one night? I should be so lucky! My baby kicked me out of bed on a more permanent basis. Wife and baby get the bed, I get the couch. Should have gotten the king size mattress, oh well. I work nights, so I get the bed all to myself most of the time anyway. Hopefully he'll be in his own bed by the time he's 18 mo. (to tell you the truth, he doesn't have a problem with sleeping in his own bed, it's my wife that has a problem with him sleeping so far away, and to be honest, I feel better knowing she's there with him just in case).

Not that that had anything to do with the brain teasers, but I don't expect anyone will be able to solve them. #1 even stumped me, and I'll bet I could even give you the answer and no one would be able to tell WHY until they heard it. #2 I was able to figure out, but it took me at least a good 10 minutes. #2 might get solved, but I don't think anyone will solve #1.

If I knew I wouldn't tell.

I haven't a clue, so far, so I am still not telling.

I am going to take a cheap crack at #2. The train is traveling at the same speed as all three. The "car" is a rail car that is being pulled in the train. The Lorry is also on the train, as is the van. They are "piggy back" type transported truck trailers.

The train is going 36. Van is a British term for box car.

Yeah, it's just not in the budget to do everything I need to AND get a motor and battery and all that. I was close before and could have made it out at the end of the season with nothing more than an electric trolling motor before the transom mistake, but since that will cost another $200 on top of all that, it will put me just beyond the season. Next year will be good though. :)

Nope, good guess but all three are going different speeds at the same time.

Very good guess, and TECHNICALLY if that's true, then it would work, so I'll give you points for that... but that wasn't what we're going for here. Btw, you're REALLY close to the speed that it's travelling.

Here's a hint on #2, there is a mathematical solution to this one.

$15.42 I reckon, approx.?

Nope, not even close on this one. I would give you a hint on #1, but what's the use if you won't "lend me your ears." ;)

It depends, they're on a SLIDING scale!

Don't know if it's right, but I like my answer :D

I don't know, you can't TRACK it!

See, my brain only works at night, doesn't mean it works right :D

Nope. Good try.

I don't know, you can't TRACK it!

Nope.

Neither of these are about word play. They are both about math, specifically addition (both brainteasers) if that helps. In fact you can solve both using addition only.

See you just have to TRAIN your brain to stay on TRACK. Sorry, someone had to get all the bad puns out of the way sooner or later. :D

ding ding ding! You are correct sir! *cheers from the audience*
I didn't think anyone would get that one. Tell me the truth, was it my "lend me your ears" hint that gave it away? :)

Now to explain it to the rest of you that are still scratching your heads as I was when I first read the answer... the Roman Numberals in the names of the items are added up. In the case of the SLEIGHS, L and I are the only two roman numberals, and those add up to LI or 51 cents for those of you that insist on using our current symbols. :D

Now that the first one is out of the way, the second one should be a piece of cake. (that's NOT a hint)

Re: The toughest brain teaser ever...

Not as sure about this one. Got a mental block.... All I've come up with is the train is going 20mph... the two 3 letter words (car and van) add up to 57mph, the lorry is 37, so the train (also 5 letters) has to be doing 20 (37+20=57).

Can't come up with anything better I'm afraid.

The first one was easy... You said addition... So I started to assign values to the letters and noticed the roman numerals... was easy after that... Your 'lend me your ears' was a great confirmation... Thanks....
