Converting a 25hp merc

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and boating in general. I picked up an older 14' Sportcraft runabout from a family member last summer with a 25hp Mercury. She runs great, and I have had a ton of fun with it, but I am interested in pulling the motor and putting it on a slightly larger row-boat, to be able to fit one or two more friends for a day out fishing. Although the hull I have now is in great shape, it only allows 1 person to comfortably sit in it.

My issue is I am unaware on how to switch the motor from being controlled by cable steering and remote throttle to a "skiff" setup, where I would use a control arm directly off the motor with a twist throttle. If someone could show me how/where to buy a kit for such modification it would be much appreciated!

Those engines originally came with a tiller arm and twist throttle. To put remote controls and remote steering requires the fitting of a kit. You may be able to pick up the parts required to return it to tiller control from a dealer who has put a kit on a similar engine and now has the tiller parts available.

Awesome, thanks Chris! Do you know about how much I should be expected to pay for such a setup? I am pretty experienced with mechanics, I have done extensive work on motorcycles and cars, so I feel comfortable doing this myself.

I have absolutley no idea what you could expect to pay. The remote control kit is charged (I don't know what they are worth these days) to the client. The old parts still belong to the client, but usually the shops (illegally) keep them. I guess if you managed to find someone who is having the convertion done you could do a deal with them.
