I am having problems, when I put the motor cover on I loose power. When the cover is off the motor runs perfectly. Any ideas ?

Re: Evinrude 1978 55HP trouble

Welcome to iboats matt.

You probably have an exhaust leak. I believe, but am not certain, others will correct me, that there is a bellows hose under the hood in the back corner where water sprays out. Exhaust comes out too. I'll bet it's torn or leaking. That'll pollute the air inside the cowl rather quickly and starve the motor of oxygen. It could also be the round rubber gasket that seals the midsection from the powerhead. Outboards dont like breathing their own exhaust.

All that and/or maybe the exhaust cover gasket also...

Had this same issue with a 1976. It was the exhaust housing gasket. Tedious to change but not difficult. Used high temp gasket material and it has worked for years since.

Look for any wires that may be getting pinched or grounded outn when you put the cover on, inspectthem all real well, it only takes a little bit of insulation to be cracked or chipped on a motor and ground out on the block to cause poor performance.
