Stringer/transom joining

I am replacing the stringers in my 21' fg boat as well as the transom (outboard motor). Has anyone of you guys heard of burying the stringers into the transom. I plan to use seacast for the transom and though that I could have the stringers protruding into the transom cavity that will have seacast poured into it to attach the two structures. Could even possibly attach some brackets to the ends of the stringers to anchor them into the transom once poured.

Suggestions?

Re: Stringer/transom joining

the transom pushes against the end of the stringers, you idea would defeat that, if it ever broke loose the transom could move forward. just butt joint it. i like to throw 2 knee braces in each side of the bilge well, with drainage hole in them.

What do you mean knee braces?

Angles like triangles maybe?

yep, a triangle, and where the deck and transom meet cut a good size notch in it so water can drain past it. and completely glass it in.

In the above pics, It would be my guess that you are going to fill the area between the stringers with foam. You have gaps between the floor and the stringers at the transom intersection. How do you keep the foam from getting water logged?

It makes a lot of sense to put those gaps between the floor and stringers cause if water infiltrates any inclosed area, without the gaps it would be stuck. How often did you place the gaps on the stringers, if any other places at all?

Re: Stringer/transom joining

There is only foam inbetween the outer stringers, not inbetween the the inner 3 stringers.

When the deck was constructed, floor joists were run athwardships. After the deck was installed foam was poured under sides of the deck which the joists sat on. This was more than enough support. Therefore the tiny bit of water that gets into the bilge via the aft rod holders doesn't hit the foam.

The underside of the deck has 1 full layer of 1708 and additional 1708 tabbing on the joists.

Re: Stringer/transom joining

it seems with drains that far back that water could enter the foam if you ever forget the plug.

with drains further forward, water could just run past and pool in the stern on plane or jacked up on the trailer.

too many decisions

Still have no idea what you are referring to.

You mean the big scuppers? Water going in and out of the them, hits the deck...not the foam.

The pvc tube you see in the pic of the underside of the deck is a rigging tube for wiring and engine rigging.

What picture are you talking about (what number picture from top to bottom).

Re: Stringer/transom joining

The holes you are referring to are called "limber" holes. They keep water from getting trapped between stringers and the outer stringer and hullside.

Look what can happen without limber holes. See all the water trapped between the outer port stringer and the hullside

With limber holes and due to the hull shape/deadrise, the water just drains to the center of the bilge.

My boat is permanently slipped from April thru November so forgetting the garboard (drain) plug isn't an option. However, if one did forget to put in the drain plug and water hit the foam it wouldn't soak the foam. This is closed cell foam and it takes permanent exposure to water for awhile for it start to breaking down and soak up the water.

But like I said no water does get in there.
