Had bearings go out several times. I had new galvanized wheels but had bearing problems. Now my rims are blackened and I wonder how I will make them look good again. Degreaser is not working. I am starting to think I will have to pop the tires off the rims, sand them down, and maybe use that galvanized spray to refurbish them.

Has anyone else had this problem?

That sounds like you're making a Major Project out of Nothing.......

It's a Boat Trailer,......... Not a Show Car.......

When I purchased my boat, the PO neglected the aluminum mag rims on the trailer and after some elbow greese and what Bond said above, they came out sparkeling.

I use brake cleaner to remove chain grease from my motorcycle rims. Comes right off. Any residual brake cleaner dissipates in the air.

Concentrated KRUD KRUTTER from Home Depot works for me.

I'm a stickler about clean wheels. Car or boat trailer.

I use gasoline. Not recommended but VERY effective.

Gee - I use Castrol SuperClean or Spray Nine. Both cut grease and oil very well.

I like to use Simple Green for easy projects... Brake Cleaner for really greasy projects.

id use brake cleaner, i work at mechanic shop and for all de-greasers we use brake cleaner in place...unless industrial strength cleaners....or any type bleach, or window cleaner that has ammonia.

"GUNK"
which is basically kerosene in a spray can.

Just be careful with some cleaners and solvents as they could react badly with the galvanizing.

I tried brake cleaner and I tried Simple green, they did NOT get the axle grease off..... The only thing that worked for me was gasoline and a brush, then I used simple green to get all the gas off. I then repainted and they came out like new.

I would opt for some mineral spirits first than finish up with some Dawn dish detergent. Both cut grease well and mineral spirits is a bit nicer to work with than diesel fuel or kerosene. Castrol Super clean works too but it's hard on paint. I've been a big fan of Dawn dish liquid ever since I saw how they used it to clean up oil spills.

You may want to take a piece of cardboard and scrape the bulk of it off first, then soften it with some mineral spirits and do a final wash with the Dawn liquid,(original formula). A good coat of wax will help keep wheel clean in the future, even it does nothing for appearance.
