I bought a used 17' Nitro with a Motorguide 750 Brute, 12/24 volt trolling motor that was wired 12 volt. I've searched the threads and was grateful for the information on how to wire a 3 wire, 24 volt system. My question though, is there are only two wires from the foot controll to the 4 prong plug which is connected to the three wires going to the batteries. It looks to me like the previous owner robbed the two wire connection from a previous 12 volt trolling motor. Now, the foot controll has a 12/24 volt switch, but only has two wires connected to it (one hot, and one going to the motor). By disconnecting the hot wire, (now 24 volt) from the 12 volt terminal and connecting it to the 24 volt terminal, the motor works, but seems to run extra fast. My concern is, is there a separate circuit that should be connected to when using the 24 volt system as opposed to the 12 volt system. I haven't had it in the water yet to test it under a load, because I'm afraid of burning up the motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So remove the two wire cable and replace it with three wires and the existing plug. You will again have the 12/24 capability. The reason the motor spins faster on 24 volts is it because it is running on 24 volts, not 12. Twice the power!!! You can run it on 24V as you found out, but you won't have the 12V capability.

ok... thank you, but if I knew how to wire it I would have simply added another wire. My concern is, is there a separate circuit for 12/24 volt. If I run 24 volts to the starter on my car, it will spin faster until I burn the starter up. Is the Motorguide designed to run on either 12 or 24 volt on the same circuit? Thank you again

Don't you think the motor is designed to run on 24V? The three wire system has +24V (two series wired 12V batteries) on the red and black wires. when switched to 12V the orange and black wires carries 12V to the motor. The motor is designed to run on either 12 or 24V. Only two of the three wires are used at any one time. Look at the foot pedal, you will probably see where the third wire was disconnected.

ok, Thanks much
The simple answer is yes, it will run on 24v with no problem.
It was made to.
All you are doing is switching from 1 battery to 2 with the 12/24v switch.

Thank you Spinner bait. That's what I wanted to know. Now I can get on to more important things, like fishing.
