Cougar Picture..of Oklahoma Kitty....Feel safe hiking in the woods?

Here is a photo of a cougar killed SW of Jet Oklahoma. The guy who shot it is 6 foot tall and weighs about 220 lbs. He was in a deer stand and saw the cat pass him downwind. He then saw it pass him upwind. When the cat passed him again (closer this time) downwind, he knew that it was hunting him. So, boom.

After viewing this, do you still feel safe in the woods?

Although I don't agree on shooting the cat. If he didn't have a chance on getting out of that tree stand without becoming the kitty's lunch then I guess I would half to shoot it myself, but I would at least have it mounted and stuffed. That is a huge cat though isn't it?

Re: Here KITTY KITTY KITTY

He was being stalked......The poor kitty would got it from me the second pass.......If OKL. is anything like Mo. the DNR says there are no mt. lions in this area (Regardless of numerous sightings each year) So I would have shot the cat that doesnt exist if I felt threatened.

I have been up in my tree stand once and heard a ruckus and some growling type noise that made my hair stand on end......On second thought if I saw that cat pass by me just once and thought it might have been after me I might have taken it out....Im not that brave :D

Re: Here KITTY KITTY KITTY

That was my first thought, but no way to tell this was forewarded to me by a friend. No one seems to have heard anything about it in the news. I believe shooting a non existant lion in OK is illegal. If it's real what do you guys think the weight would be.

#265 my guess

That is a HUGE cat. I also would have shot it if I was his planned lunch.
Mich DNR says we also have no cougars even though sitings and physical evidence (scat and deer carcasses bitten through the neck, tracks, all found by CO's) say otherwise.:confused:

Yeah, wow!! Could be real though, here's a C & P from an attack a coupla years ago:

2004

8 January. (Attacks #12 and 13; death #6) 35-year-old Mark Jeffrey Reynolds, an amateur mountain bike racer, was killed by a mountain lion sometime after 1:25 p.m. at Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in southern Orange County. Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department, speculated that Mark was attacked as he was fixing his bike.

Later the same day, Anne Hjelle, 30, of Santa Ana, a former Marine who works as a fitness instructor, was jumped by the same mountain lion. Anne was attacked a short distance down the trail from Mark's body, which was not visible to her, while she was riding her mountain bicycle. The lion jumped her from a slight rise (~4 feet) on the right hand side of the trail, from under some high brush. The lion quickly had Anne's face in its mouth, despite the presence of Anne's helmet. Her riding companion, Debi Nicholls, was about 30 feet behind Anne and witnessed the attack. Debi threw her bike at the mountain lion, to no avail, then grabbed Anne's legs and screamed as the lion dragged both of them 30 feet down the slope into the brush. The lion kept attacking Anne, alternating between her helmet, face and neck. The screams brought Nils Magnuson, 33, of Long Beach, and Mike Castellano to the scene, who called 911 and scared off the mountain lion by throwing rocks at it.
Anne was airlifted to Mission Hospital. Her condition was initially critical, was upgraded from serious as of early 9 January, and to fair as of 10 January.
Nils was nearby since he had just found Mark's bicycle, and was about to look for Mark. (Mountain bikers crash fairly frequently, so finding a crashed bicycle is not an unusual occurrence. It is customary to stop and render aid to crashees.) After this attack, Mark's body was found dead higher on the trail than where Anne was attacked. Mark had apparently been dead for some hours, and his body had been half-eaten and partially buried, typical of a mountain lion kill. Later that night, Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a healthy 3- to 4-year-old, 110-122 pound male lion, which was spotted 50 yards from the man's body. Initial tests found human skin tissue, and portions of a human lung and liver in the lion's stomach, which were confirmed later to match Mark's DNA. No fibers from Anne's clothing, nor any slivers from her helmet, were found in the initial examination, but later DNA tests matched Anne to the blood on one of the lion's claws.

Goshamighty!!:eek::eek:

I have seen a cougar from a distance around here now and then and I have seen them in zoos, but that cat is far bigger than any I have ever seen.

If that cat was stalking him he sure wasn't gonna see any deer around there.

The cougars around here are usually spotted when making a serious effort to not be seen and to not get close to people. Livestock losses are very rare, but cats and dogs disappear regularly.

On the island we have an attack on humans at least once a year. We even get them in town every now and again. A 220 pound cat is not out of the ordinary.

I relly think I would have fired a warning shot into the ground to try to spook it first..... However..... I have a friend that shot a 25 lb bobcat that was going to attack.

It's the biggest I have ever seen.

Snopes has a different tale although the cat is or was real in 2003.

I'm pretty sure that is an altered pic. I am been up close and personal with a live cougar and the proportions of the cat in this pic are exaggerated in comparison to the man.

Mudmagnet63:

This year ODW has declared "open season" for the removal of problem mountian lions. This protects people when they have to take out a nusience preditor, otherwise they would have been committing a felony here in the Nations.

Puma are getting much more prevailent in this state and has been frequently seen up and down the Cimmaron, Wa****a, Canadian and Red rivers. There is a local one that comes up a draw just a quarter mile to the east of us. We are four to five miles north of the Cimmaron here. As long as it keeps to itself and just feed on the dogs the local college kids feeds it, it is plenty safe around here. The deer have learned to keep out of its way for the most part. My cats stay in at night due to the big kitty, bobkitties and occasional wild dogs.

I worry more about snakes. The two legged, red banded type. Now if we could get ODW to declare an open season on them.
