Re: Prayers requested

Thanks for your support and prayers! As best I can tell, in some ways Pap is doing better, his white blood cell count is up slightly, and he is showing signs of healing, but his kidney's and bowels are not yet working they way they should, so that is a waiting game. But my wife said he is getting grumpy and wanting to go home, so that is a good sign. :D

Thanks again, and when I hear more I will let you know.

Glad to hear the "grumpy" part! That is always a good sign!
Hope the good luck flow turns into a flood!

Well, he still has not been able to pass gas, so he has not been able to eat yet. Intestines are still not pushing in the correct direction. White blood cell count is up almost to an acceptable range, so there are improvements, but he is still in ICU. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers. I will be home in a week ...

I plan on it! Haven't gotten to the wood market yet - going to look at a block machine tomorrow (leave at 4 AM, so it is beddy-bye soon here) and then probably pick it up on Thursday. Friday I visit the orphanage and might have some time to stop in and check on the wood carvers then. Saturday is classes, and if Sunday works out (which I doubt) after Church I might have tickets to the Cup of African Nations Semi-finals! Then Monday is classes and in the evening the plane to home. So there is a lot to do, and a short time to get it done, but I am still on your request, Bob!

Re: Prayers requested

Update - the doctors feel they may have stitched him up too tight ... Mrs. Aspeck's quote was as follows:

The doctors figured out why Dad can't eat. The opening of the stomach into the intestines is too tight. I guess they sewed him up really good while they were in there! So tomorrow they are going to put a scope down his throat to see it more clearly and try to stretch the opening.

By tomorrow night they will know if that has worked. If it does not work then on Monday they will go in and take out a stitch.

I leave Ghana on Monday, and should be home Tuesday evening. It will be much better to be on the same side of the big pond as Pap, and family!

I guess the surgery is scheduled for today (Saturday). Appreciate your support and prayers! Also learned that my oldest BIL has been diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer. My wife is getting a plate full while I am gone ... glad the return trip is soon.

Re: Prayers requested

And the "soup opera" continues. Just recieved this email from my wife:

Hello again! Just wanted to let you all know that they have decided not to operate on Dad today afterall. They think they may have been able to stretch the opening far enough for things to pass through into the intestines. They don't want to operate unless they really have to. So Dad will get some liquids today and maybe jello to test the opening.
Thank you all for the prayers!

I echo her thanks for your prayers - apparently they are working!

Re: Prayers requested

Another email this morning:

Shortly after you get this email they will be operating on Dad again at 7:30 or so. I guess they are calling it 'exploratory' but they will fix anything they find that isn't right. He started the day out well. He felt better than he had been, got cleaned up, shaved but after he ate he started to not feel well. They ended up giving him something for naseau. I'll let you know the results as soon as I can so you don't have to wonder on your trip home. Since the operation is so early, I don't plan on going out.

Leaving Ghana for home tonight (5pm EST) and will be home tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Thanks, everyone, for your support.

Sitting in Detroit waiting for my flight to State College ... just talked to wife and she tells me that Pap came through the operation well yesterday and he is doing extremely well ... better than he has been in weeks! Might even get to go home Thursday or Friday! Thanks for your prayers and support - they are calling my flight, must go.
