1995 Bayliner Capri, 3.0 Alpha-1 Gen11.. Just dropped the outdrive back off to look for bad/missing seals due to the prior post where I tried to fill the drive through the reservoir and ended up with the oil on the floor. Well after separating the lower unit I found were the oil travels from the upper to lower drive and the small o-ring that goes there is missing.. Hope this was my leak. My question concerns the drive shaft that runs through the impeller,, where it goes into the upper drive it appears to have an O-ring but I can't tell, I looked in the manual and can't seem to find it. I would like to make sure it actually has one there before I start digging around in there.. Ideas??

You have to study the manual the view on page 3B-6 shows all the lower seals as well as the correct lubes and glues so it will not leak

A pressure test is 100% nessary before it goes into service to find any other small leaks

yes #6 on that page is the o-ring that was missing (thank you Don).. The seals I'm refering to are part of the upper drive,, where the shaft slides in.. I don't see them on this diagram... Thanks..

Section 3A shows the seals in the upper. You are in section 3B

If you are talking about the seals in the GEN II upper they do NOT come out without taking the drive apart

You better read that section, don't just look at the pictures.

Re: Sterndrive O-ring-???

Well I was able to get the seal/seals out.. There were two different ones,, one was very small and was actually made of metal (stretched like elastic) and the other seemed to be plastic,, or possibly it was one seal that came apart.. I wish I had just left it alone now.. I think i'll take the whole upper drive into the dealership tomorrow,,,, it appears that seal just keeps water out of the upper drive in case the water pump seals/line leaks..correct? Oh well..

Yes, the lower seal is to keep water out. Look at page 3A-39 on how to install the seals.

Re: Sterndrive O-ring-???

Looks like i'll take it to the guys with the proper tools to replace these seals. Is this cavity where the shaft goes into the upper unit usually full of water? Just wondering since there is no actual seal or gasket where the upper and lower come together this must fill with water,, right?? The last time I put it together I put a coat of grease around where it mates up just to make it easier to take apart.. Didn't know it would be this quick..

Re: Sterndrive O-ring-???

The seals seal on the upper vertical gear shaft, not the lower unit vertical shaft.
Yes there is water in that cavity when the engine is running.
