Yamaha 225 or Evinrude 250?

My father has a 1998 Pro Sports 25.5" boat powered by a single 1998 225 Yamaha 2-stroke. Unfortunately, my dad never used the boat very much, which is now causing me major issues with the engine because it sat for too long unused.

The engine only has about 150 hours on it. A couple of weeks ago, I was out with my family on the boat and the engine blew up causing two cylinders to go kaput. Apparently there was bad oil I never checked and it caused a clog in one of the pipes that starved the engine of oil. When we took the engine in, we also found seal problems in the lower gear case that need repair. Leaks in the trim and tilt will force us to fix this issue and this could be expensive. To rebuild the Yamaha and fix the trim and tilt, it will cost me about $7,500.

My mechanic who is as trustworthy and straight-shooting as they come told me that he can do the rebuild and it will be better than the new original. However, he gave me another option that I'm considering.

He just took a 2003 250hp Evinrude 2-stroke off of another clients boat because the client wanted to trade up to the E-tec series. He said he put the engine on this client's boat in 2004 and has cared for it saying it has only about 30 hours on the engine... it's like new. The client has two boats and this engine was on his smaller boat. He said while the repair of the Yamaha would be fine, he thinks putting on the Evinrude may be a better solution as it would also fix the trim and tilt issue and start with a more fresh beginning. He says he'll rig the new engine and change out the Yamaha controls for Evinrude for about $9,500.

What would you do? Stick with the Yamaha 225 and do the rebuild which will most likely come out at $8,000 top end or go for the newer Evinrude? The mechanic says the Evinrude will be better fuel efficient and quieter. He is not pushing me either way and I feel he is not selling me hard.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I take it the Evinrude is Direct Injected. . .or is it carbed? Big difference.

If the Evinrude is DI, go for it. Much cleaner and more fuel efficient than even a perfect carbed Yammy. Though the 'Rude DI was troublesome when it was called FICHT, by 2004 BRP had worked the bugs out of it.

What Daddy said about the Yammy. It is worth something, don't give it away.

If it was carbed I would still look into it. I have a 2003 150 hp johnson. It's carbed. It's a pig but a very good outboard once tuned right.:D

FYI -- if your 150 is a pig, somethings wrong. That design is one of, if not the best OMC / BRP has. Very fast revving and a miser on fuel for a carb'd motor.

No it's not really a pig at all. I was just comparing it to the efficancy of a etec or the like.:D

Yes, that will be true. They're great for a carb'd motor but there's nothing like a DI.

Re: Yamaha 225 or Evinrude 250?

Thanks everyone for the fast responses!!

The Rude is DI and it is all the newer technology post the 2002 issues and fixes that were corrected in 2003 and beyond. Even though it is out of warranty now, the mechanic will give me a one-year warranty because he's the only one who's worked on it and knows the engine so well so it sounds like this is the best route as he'll stand behind it.

I had already asked about the Yamaha parts and it seems I'll get a couple of grand for it max, so I'll do that.

Thanks again for all the feedback.
