I just bought a '97 Jet boat with a 1997 Merc SportJet 175 motor:

Two questions:

1. the previous owner had the oil injector disabled and was mixing the gas/oil together himself. he said he used 50:1 or 1 pint to 6 gallons. but isnt 50:1 with 1 pint oil to 15 gallons? also, is 50:1 the best mix?

2. what is the cost of getting oil injector repaired or is it better to mix with gas or really no difference?

thanks!

Is the oil injecter broke or just disabled? When I bought my sportjet it was disabled because the buzzer kept going off when you would turn indicating low oil in the jug. You might want to check that out first.

I emailed old owner about that.

I had it in a Merc. Auth. shop, and they never said anything about it. I had it tuned up, carbs rebuilt, etc - nice $850 bill too.

So 50:1 the recommended mix?

I have been using 50 to 1 for almost two years with no problems

Yes you do want a 50-1 mixture. (1Pint to 6 Gallons of fuel) You definalty want to keep the oil injection disabled. Your oil injection is run by a plastic gear on the crankshaft that can strip, and the oil lines start to get brittle after several years and can break, and a multitude of other problems. most of these can burn up the motor without warning. so it is better to mix your own oil so you know it is done and can sleep better knowing it wont burn up due to a injection failure.
