Copying office 2003

Any ideas on how to copy Microsoft Office 2003 from one puter to another? I have this package on one puter and wants to install it on another one. I'm not sure which folder(s) to copy in the program files. I don't wants to go through download.com or whatever to get a free copy. Too much junks come with those.

Legalities aside (and they are significant), Microsoft's registration requirements make it difficult to even re-install Office on the same PC, let alone a different one. In order to get the registry and other settings, you really have to install from the original disks. Hopefully you've gotten a version with licenses for more than one PC.

If you're with a corporation having a site-license arragnement, your IT department should Ghost a disk image for you that will take care of all that.

If you want both ease and legality, you might want to download and try Open Office. While I use yet a different product, I've heard it is (almost?) 100% compatible with M$ Office, plus it's free.

Assuming you have a legitimate copy and have just lost your CD & Key you can do this...

You'll need to know your serial number. Google "Magical Jellybean Key Finder". Run that on the computer that has Office installed and it will tell you your Office serial number. This is not a hack or a crack program. It just gives you the serial number that was used to install Office on that computer. It gives you the XP serial number too. Print that out or write it down.

Obtain from Microsoft, Friend, P2P, whatever, the CD for the version of Office you have. Install using YOUR serial number. If it's a specially licensed OEM cd it may not install at all. For example if it says for installation on a new Dell PC or similar.

Good luck activating it. It may work and it may not.

Yes, Open Office is good stuff. I use it at home and on my laptop. The only reason I use MS Office at work is because my phone syncs with Outlook. Open Office lacks an application to replace Outlook. In my experience, Open Office handles MS Office documents just fine. It also exports directly to PDF with its word processor. MS Word won't do that without extra software. I did find the mail merge features in Open Office Writer to be hard to use, but for most documents and spreadsheets it really works great.

We use it here at work as well. I have my group policy setup to publish Open Office. If a user wants it, he/she just goes to Add/Remove programs, Add New Programs. Open Office is listed under Add Programs From Your Network.

For the the few users that must have MS Office I have a special GPO setup that I can assign to a user or computer. Once assigned, when the user logs in, the application is installed for them automagically. If I remove them from that GPO it'll also uninstall itself. The last 5 user MS open license pack for MSO2K7 cost $1800

Well, I found Opal Office, don't know if it's the same as the open office you guys mentioned, for 12 bucks. It can do just about everything MS Office does minus Outlook. It's compatible with MS Office so I'll just goes that route. Thanks.

Never heard of Opal Office but I assure you it's not the same as Microsoft Office. I have it and own it Microsoft Office and it costs a H**L of a lot more than $12 . How about $399

Just to clarify the legalities of it...

If you have purchased 1 liscensing agreement, you can legally install it on as many computers as you like, so long as only one of them is running the program at any given moment. If you want to use it on more than one computer at the same time, you will need to purchase multiple liscensing agreements. Of course that is difficult to impossible to enforce, but is something to keep in mind, considering that the fines can reach a quarter million bucks per copy. But so far, Microsoft has been pretty good about not going after the little guys, and just concentrating on businesses (the RIAA could learn a few things from them).

Licensing with Microsoft is not quite that simple, my friend. Depending on per seat\per user, MESA and about 100 other agreements (Volume, OEM, Open, Etc) you need to read the agreement first, or call MS at 800-426-9400.

Your best bet is to see if you workplace has a volume agreement that either allows you to buy software for home use (Microsoft offers Office 2007 Premium for employees at my company for less than $30) or to install it and use at home for free alltogether. Each agreement is extremely different, and not per user.

^^^ I'll second that. It really varies with the license.

For example if you buy an OEM Office license with a Dell computer. When you get a new computer later, you are not licensed to install it on the new one even if you remove it from the old one.

Remember when they started putting the Windows sticker on the side of the computer? Hehe, well that wasn't just to help you keep up with your serial number. That copy of Windows is licensed to that computer.

I purchase the eOpen licenses for work. I read my Office 2007 Eula and this is what I gathered from it. I am licensed to install it on one workstation. I can also install it on a mobile computer for that same user. I can also move the license from one system to another as long as I wait 30 days after the install.

I think people would be shocked if they read all of Microsoft's licensing details. I think more consumers would complain about things if they really understood what they were getting for their money. A good bit of their success relies on customer ignorance. I think the ones that are likely to experiment with other products (Web Browsers, Email Clients, Office alternatives, Linux) understand the licensing a little better. I believe that trend is starting to reach critical mass now. I don't want to see Microsoft go away. I make a good living using and supporting their products. But I'd like to see them trying to win the customer with good products and not dominating the market because "that's what came on the computer". Honestly, most people don't even know they can try other software. The blue E is the internet. Office is Office. The blue and white envelope is email.

Not quite. They (Opal Office) are not adding any value to the product. They are simply repackaging it with a different name and reselling it.

Linux has NOT been this way from day one. Each distribution attempts to satisfy a certain niche. Nothing is ever repackaged with a different name and resold while simultaneously obscuring the original product's name. Most every distro comes with Gnome or KDE. Guess what. They still call it Gnome and KDE. If someone develops the Cherokee http server based on the Apache web server, you can bet they will mention that in the product's description.
