Guys I got a 9.9 merc (86 Model). I just put a new empeller on it and the forwar reverse linkage got throw off, I know I know mistake but anyway I need to fix this. The way it is now when it is hooked up. The prop wont turn at all in reverse, and wont crank, in neutral it will crank and turn freely and in forward it wont crank and has a clicking noise when the prop turns. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know? Thanks

With the unit removed, shift the lower unit into fwd. gear and measure from the water pump base to the center of the hole in the top of the shift shaft ot should measure 16 1/2" on a short shaft-22" on a long or 27 1/2 on a extra long unit

I have everything back together and looks to be working, but when shifted in forward the prop when turned makes a clicking noise. Is this normal? If I crank the motor, the prop turns and doesnt make the noise that I can hear. I have not started the motor yet. It doesnt make the clicking noise in reverse. Does this sound correct. Thanks

Fwd. gear ratchets to help prevent steering torque on deacceleration.
