I have a 2001 225 EFI and today I took off the cowl and noticed some very fine metal shavings. They look to have come from the starter gear, (maybe normal wear) and after looking closely behind the throttle body I saw two sets of butterflys. These look to open at some time and had some of the fine shavings on them. Could this damage my motor and should I clean this up? Do these butterflys open each time I give it gas? Sound stupid but I never noticed these being in the open before with not type of filter. Anybody have knowledge on this subject? Thanks in advance

Those are the throttle or air valves and yes, clean up the particles. You don't want those getting into the engine. There is no air filter on an outboard since there isn't much dust on a lake.

Do you think the water keeps the dust down some? Sorry bout that, anyway the inside of the cowl should be pretty much spotless, right
