Ok,.....

You've got a 1998,.. With an Electric Choke which uses the Purple Wire,....

The Purple Wire Should be Hot with 12V, whenever the Key is in the On position.....

What's your Question,..??....

Can you get the Mercruiser Serial Number? You may have a 97 engine and I have a link for it's service manual, but not one for a 98. Either way, the wiring diagram is the same. Here it is.

when the motor is hot,and the key is in on postion, the choke is not 12 v ?
There 'a temperature sensor that pilot choke?
I do not see sensors, only water temperature

Did you test the wire with a volt meter?

Re: mercruiser 3.0 l

You DO NOT have to run the engine to see if the choke operates.
You need to use a voltmeter and check if you have voltage at the purple wire on the choke coil.

Here is how that choke works.
When voltage is put to the choke coil (also know as a choke cover in the service manual), it heats up the spring inside and pushes the choke plate open.
If you have a bad ground or no power to the choke coil, then it will not operate. If you have a bad choke coil, it will not open. You have to use your meter to determine which is defective.

Know the reason for the operation, and 'given from start cold, the engine seems to be starting a 3-cylinder, compression ok, new spark plug, new cables, new distributor cap! 30 40 seconds later appears to be operating normally at 4 cylinders
?????
Why?

The translation is hard :D

But the choke is stupid, the purple wire just heats a spring that opens the choke plate in about 40 to 60 seconds

The rough running during the the first 40 seconds sounds about right You have to use the tack and run the motor at about 1500 RPM during warmup

It will never run like a modern car with fuel injection ;)

Re: mercruiser 3.0 l

Is this the first time you have owned an engine with a carburator on it? It sounds as though things are working nomal.
The 3.0L engines ALWAYS run very rough when first started while the choke is closed. As the choke opens (electricaly as Tommays mentioned) and the engine warms at the same time, it smooths out and will run fine.
That is just the way a carburated engine works.

Yes, your engine is a 98, sorry, no service manual available online.
