I whipped up a stand to hold the OD for winter storage. It's very simple yet effective. I can provide some dimensions or a build schematic if anyone is interested.

Parts list:
4 swivel casters ($1.99 each at horrible freight)
2 2*3's (~$1.50 each at Lowes)
Screws (had them laying around from another project)
30 minutes to cut and assemble.

Tools used:
Power Miter saw
Tape measure
Screw Gun
Framers square

The stand was cheap and quick, and I can move the OD around when I need it out of the way. Hopefully this gives some ideas to anyone who may need a stand.

Ryan

**Edit, maybe I should make a support to hold the drive shaft up a bit? I post up another pic when that's done.

Re: OD Stand

That looks very much like the stand my machanic has for OD's when hes working on the boat or drive.

Why do you pull the drive off though?

Here's another good pointer>> If you want to service it while in storage or any time I got some long bolts and hung mine on a spare engine stand i had. Works great and you can tip it sideways and lock it in position to inspect up into the upper housing.:D

Re: OD Stand

I like the engine stand idea, being able to rotate it would be a good feature.

I took the OD off so someone else doesn't do it for me... there was a few people who had missing outdrives over the summer. I wanted to make sure I didn't become one of them. It kinda scary how easily they come off. With my luck I'd catch the thief, take a shot at them and wind up blowing a hole in my boat.

Also, I wanted to replace the impeller in the comfort of the warm basement, not out in the snow.

Yes, very glad I caught it now. I think catching it later would mean my wallet would be even lighter...

Hopefully the disassembly tomorrow will be with out surprise. I just got done removing a bunch of broken exhaust studs on my f-150, I don't want a repeat of that mess...

It's funny you posted this thread. I got a gift card for Christmas that I have been contemplating using on a McGard Stern Drive Lock. Anyone have any experiance with them? Are they really a theft deterant?

I didn't mean to hijack this thread just curious.

Re: OD Stand

Pound a socket slightly smaller in inner diameter than the lock is in outer diameter, and you can take it off w/o the key. Very quickly might add. With a deadblow hammer, maybe even quietly. I wouldn't let that be my only protection. However if your boat has one, and the next one over does not, maybe the thief moves on to the next...

Re: OD Stand

Yea my boat had a stern drive lock when I bought it and the key was lost.

I had to have th emotor pulled a few months ago so my machanic cut it off and didnt even touch the threads!.

Yea I figured Theft was a good reason to pull the drive. It has crossed my mond when I store my boat and see all the other boats there and wounder if that has ever happend.

Id be so pissed to go find my boat missing its Bravo ONE and prop......then Id have to steal a Brovo three LOL..... ( na I really wouldnt do that to someone else )

Re: OD Stand

Here's the one I made out of 2x6s for my OMC Cobra, I used adjustable bed casters to make it height adjustable.

Your pictures in the orignal post showing a machinest metal lathe and your "ROUGH' Sketch, along with how the finished stand looks, tells me you have been a machinest for a while.
But, no CAD programs ?????

Re: OD Stand

G1K,

Your photos prompted me to stop procrastinating and make a stand. Built it Sunday before superbowl. I used a mix of 2x3s and 2x4s, a little larger (22"Wx24"Lx19"H), but same basic design. Need to purchase some wheels, but holds it well in a stationary position. I liked your wider approach. It makes a decent work platform, vs the smaller ones that hold the drive at the bottom. THX.

How's a 3d model?

It's easier to do the drawing with a pencil and paper sometimes, but this works also. I do have to learn how to change the grey into a wood tone in Solidworks. I haven't gotten that far yet.

I think the 3d model took as much time as the paper drawing, but it's much easier to change down the road.

I'm not really a machinist, it's just a hobby. It is nice to make something when you need it now...

Re: OD Stand

G1K, (if your still reading this thread) Thanks for sharing your stuff. I've been trying to come up with a good stand for OD service and you've got the best I've seen. Hope I can return the favor someday.

Re: OD Stand

From the original pictures, it looks like there is lifting involved with getting the drive on the stand? My drive almost touches the floor when level. How hard would it be to make it so the stand has one of the through pieces cut away and you just wheel up the stand, unbolt the drive, and push the whole thing into the corner?
