Yamaha 115 water pump puzzle

Have just had my '97 115F serviced by a reputable shop, including water pump replacement. Now it puts out no water at all while idling; when I rev the motor to about 2,000rpm, it starts producing---though not as much as before---and when I idle back down, the flow stops.

Went back to the mechanic, who found nothing wrong. Ideas?

Yea sounds like the insert cartrage is spinning with the impeller inside the water pump housing. If that insert cartrage is not seated correctally during this service than that is what can happen. You wont get hardly any water flow until about 1500 or 1800 rpm.

forget about the insert spin.
its a physical impossibility and if it did it would simply never pump.
the rubber dam under the wear plate may have corrosion, the pressure control valve may be stuck or the muffs are leaking some air.
not having seen the job its hard to say.
some folks simply replace an impeller and call it rebuilt others actually use the full kit.

Thanks for the input; ironically, the old pump was working fine before ths service; it was just time for a replacement.
Will go back to the mechanic with these ideas.

Did you have the work done at an authorized Yamaha dealer? What were the part numbers opf the parts that were replaced? (That will give us an idea of what was done).

The shop is not a Yamaha dealer; didn't get an itemized bill with part numbers, but will ask for them.

Thanks........
