I was just looking at my manual and noticed some things. My motor is a 72' but it has some of the same wiring as the 73-76 models. Mine has the 72' key swith/choke assembly, but it has the male/female connections like the 73'-76'. According to the manual mine should also have a green wire that goes all the way to the battery+ terminal of the starter solenoid, but instead the green wire on mine meets up with the red battery cable inside the female end of the connection point. Also the diagram for the 72' does not show a neutral safety switch, but mine in fact does have one. Does the fact that my motor is an anniversary edition have anything to do with this, or would it just have been later in the year and possibly they started incorporating some of the 73' concepts into a few 72' models? I just thought it was interesting.

72 had the big black or yellow cannon plug, on the main harness. 73 they changed to the Red plug. which do you have? 72's were Hydro-Electric shift. 73's-were Hydro-mechanical shift.

You probably have a "Johnsonstein" an older Johnson that has undergone some changes and repairs.
Possibly you have a younger lower unit with a preferable mechanical shift.
Whoever made the change over also adapted the rest of your outboard.

mine has the black cannon plug, but it does not have hydroelectric shift, it is a manual shift.

really? Where the cannon plug screws down, that looks original. The red round plugs didnt screw down like that did they?

this is a 20hp motor, electric start, electric choke, standard manual shift, and it has a thermostat, which I didn't expect.
