I don't get it, they throw a ticker tape parade for our exorbitantly paid sports hero's, they're treated like the "golden child!" while they treat our servicemen who put their life on the line, like an "illegitimate child", downplay them, and pay them a mere pittance! What's wrong with this picture?!

Are we no better then the ancient Greeks, & Roman's, sending the Christian's to the Lion's?!

I'm sorry but I don't follow sports, (I like cars, boats, & motorcycles) so all the hoopla, doesn't faze me! In fact, it annoys me, to see them given a hero's celebration! But, I am a fan of our fighting man, our military! God Bless them, & keep them safe!

I am perturbed these sport's hero's didn't win any battle, or war! (rant)

Why not have a parade?......
The NFL is a part of Americana, just like baseball.......
It instills a sense of pride in community & country......;)
We haven't had any "real" war "heroes" since WWI or WWII....
Like the magnatude of say an Alvin York.....
Not to say that all of the servicemen are not 'heroes'......
But it will take an act by an individual that is so heroic that it cannot be ignored, to get that kind of fanfare.....
I don't think that will happen in modern day warfare......:)

Haut Medoc, you are correct partially, WW1 & 2, were fought by the military, the rest were fought by the politians. I did the Nam thing, as a incountry navy corps with the marines. every Kid injured in all these disputes, deserves the parade. those ball players got a big paycheck for their luck, and no one was shooting at them.

i know this is getting very close to the line.

No "real" war hereos? GIVE ME A BREAK. You should read a book by Marcus Luttrell, entitled "Lone Survivor". It's about the worst loss of life in Navy SEAL history - Afghanistan, 2005 (I think). Marcus tells of a number of heros in that book, but doesn't consider himself a hero. I consider him a "real" hero.

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

First: It is customary to congratulate competitors on outstanding achievement. The Giants achieved outstanding success in sports competition and deserve congratulations. Many sports fans consider the success of "their" team also a personal success and celebrate.

For each of the bazillionaire sports figures there are hundreds who struggle at the threshold and don't make "stardom". It is just another competition where the winners win and the non-winners lose.

No war heroes? Search up my story of Charles Neilsen, Jr. "Charley Boy", as he is known here is as bone fide a war hero as any, ever, but became politically incorrect when he deserted due to PTSS. Recognition was witheld from him.

War heroes get celebrated in the wake of great successes that are politically popular. We had plenty in Nam and we have plenty in Iraq and Afghanistan. May they someday get the recognition they so richly deserve.

In all due rspect H M, Let me get this right, you don't think everyone of our servicemen is a hero? I Do, and think they do happen to deserve "that kind of fanfare"

Pride in country, & community, gimme a break! It's just a Giant money machine for all involved, lets pay them what our soldiers get, and outlaw all the nationwide side betting, (Points?, I don't even know what that means?) and then see what pride, & country, & sportsmanship is really like?

(In fact, lets let them play to their death, the losing team gets executed, I bet they'd play real good then!,,,lol ) just joking here, to prove a point.

But, I'll save my Pride, & respect for anyone in our military.

I just want you to know, that I see other posters jumped in as I was composing my post, just so you know HM this response was not based on, copied, composed, or swayed by their opinion, it's strictly my own.

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

I'm not sure why we can't have both.. It is not an either/or. If my team won the Superbowl we would party, but I would not go as so far to say they are heroes. It is a celebration, not a hero worship. Certainly there are some that feel that way but they are in the minority.

As for why we don't celebrate the war heroes the same. I think this has to do with the fact that there will be no defining moment of success. As in WWII, there was capitulation from our enemies. When we had the ticker tape parades, it was in celebration of these capitulations and the defining moment that we won and could wlecome oir boys home.

There are lots of celebrations. Celebrations when individual units come home and the small towns lay out the welcome home. It is just not done to the scale of the victory day ticker tape parades.

I am certain that if we had that type of defining moment, there would be celebration.

Due to the "kinder, gentler" iboats, I will say that no, you "do not have it right"......:)
Go back & read what I wrote, esp. line 6......;)
DR, yes that is a long list, & I'm certain that those men deserve hero status, but how many of those names do you recognize?.....;)
I am in no way trying to belittle or demean their exploits.....
I certainly do not view football players as heroes at all.....

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

The real answer has to do with the changing definition of "heroes". We used to idolize integrity. Now we idolize money. The whole sports thing makes sense to me...

If it weren't for our servicemen and women giving their lives overseas, we wouldn't be able to have things like the Superbowl. There is a reason those military jets fly over before each game. A way of saying, "Don't you forget, if it weren't for us, this wouldn't be happening."

A heartfelt thank you for everyone who served, past, present, and future. May God bless those people and their families, for the sacrifices they have made have allowed us to be the greatest nation on Earth.

this is a fantastic post....way to go water. and ditto on the last paragraph.

we all owe a "life debt".....to all our millitary......right from the vetran to the person peeling potatoes.......

as far as the sports parade....we watch our teams and hope for them every day...

jb, said it best,....quote.. " Many sports fans consider the success of "their" team also a personal success and celebrate."

i think.....if we got to follow a single unit of the troops for a whole year.....saw how they did in a fight....then saw a letter from home.....a difficult sitation and they are a thousand miles away, and cant help......then went out on patrol fifteen minits later.........day in and day out......

theyd get a lot bigger than a parade......!

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

My opinion.......

I define servicemen, servicewomen and veterans in totally seperate catagory. They are not in it for the glory or the trophy and absolutely not the money. They tend to be quiet and normally do not boast about the hero status. They do not want to be forgotten.

My view of a pro sports team is ..... they are great morale boosters and 99.9% support the armed services and veterans. Their jobs do pay better and they get the glory...... What do you think was the primary "foxhole" conversation the last few weeks???? It can be motivating and fun.

It does not bother me that the parades happen....... most servicepeople hate parades and do not enjoy the dog and pony show to be put on display. They really do not take anything away and they get "good press". TD mentioned that certain conflicts were political and he is right IMO(there are no right or wrong answers here.... just opinions).

Tha sad part is when we tolerate the "good press" recognizing the bad people and bad things....... but again that is what all serrvicepeople have faught to uphold.

I have 20 years Active Duty and retired 1993. I make it a point to go out of my way to speak with any soldier I see in public. I also have made myself available if one is home on leave and needs a place to hunt or someone to fish with....... an action I would ask every iboats person to do. ;)

True'er words have not been spoken.

I may not agree with with all the hoopla for the sport stars, and all the actors and actress's that must be in the headlines everyday showing us how stupid they can live, but I do feel that every American that puts on a uniform, or has ever put on a uniform, is a hero in my book and I thank each and every one of you for my freedom.
