Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

I'm certain there are plenty of service members that attended the Giants' parade and cheered them from afar. We celebrate sports and their heroes because they provide relief from our otherwise dull, sometimes painful lives. It' silly to even compare the two issues. And yes, I was a service member.

Why not throw the parade for both?

Congress writing a bill just to call the Giants heroes was way over the top though. Congress should be ashamed for that one, because, like you said, they haven't yet thanked our servicemen.

This is silly.

Do any of you think that if we celebrate achievement in sports that we can't celebrate the service of our young men and women defending freedom anywhere in the world?

They are not in competition with each other. In many American hearts they are complementary. . .each elevating the other.

Whether we celebrate individuals for being the best in the world at sport or entertainment or revere their service at war. . .it is a lot like love, the more we give the more we have to give.

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

I'm sorry, I just don't think these sports figures deserve a ticker tape parade, that's usually reserved for special world changing events, of which I don't consider winning the superbowl one of them. I think it is pure folly to cater to them in this way, It's sad to see the mentality of this country, or should I say New York, that drives putting these guys up on the highest pedestal of recognition, over a game, A Game for God's sakes!!! That's hero worship gone insane! Don't these guys get enough recognition, exhorbitant money, offers, bonus's, and perks as it is??? Should we cater, & coddle, to them some more? It appears this country is losing it's values, along with it's morals, I mean, we already figured greed is not just good, it's Great! sending most of our jobs overseas, and our skilled workers, working at McDonalds, or Walmart, unable to exist, and illegal aliens building our houses, that the middle class is losing, left, and right,,, Oh, and with many people unable to afford healthcare nowadays, don't ever get sick. No wonder we're going to hell in a handbasket! We Really Need To Get A Grip, And Get Our Priorities In Order! This should be our wake up call!

The super bowl champs always get a parade, no matter what state they are from, and have for, as far as I know, since the first superbowl. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

I think you are pushing apples into the orange bin.

The two really cannot be compared. Sports figures are employed by a private company, have endorsements through private companies and play games, watched by us on networks which are private companies. We are an entertainment based society. Singers, sports stars, actors.....those get our attention. Is it good? I don't know, but it certainly can't be compared to the attention the military gets upon their return. That's apples and oranges.

Service men and women are in the military. Their job is not to bring in endorsements from large companies, but to protect the citizens of this country. Just like football, not everybody is a fan of the military. The Superbowl has become a wonderful thing to bring families together over good food and to have a good time.

I don't know too many heros in the military who would be upset that any of us are enjoying the Superbowl. They might be a little bit jealous that they aren't at home enjoying it with friends and family, but they are in a unique position in that their sacrifices are why we are here enjoying the game.

What you can't forget is that football is something that can bridge the gap between republican and democrat. You can hardly tell by looking in the stands which side of the fence they rest on. However, since our military is deployed by our president, who is either a republican or democrat, some people see the military as an extension of the president and in some cases will not support them for that reason.

I really have a hard time comparing the Superbowl or any sporting event to the military. People like to have a person or small team to cheer on....how exactly do you cheer on a military of almost a half million?

My only point was that congress should draft a bill stating that the men serving overseas are heroes before passing one (100-0 in the senate today) stating that the Giants are heroes. That's just my .02. Nothing wrong with celebrating the Giants' win though.

Before you rant, you need to get the facts straight instead of listening to the radio puff-daddys. It was not a congressional bill. It was a Senate resolution. It had no mention of "hero", but simply congratulated the NY Giants for winning.

This contains the actual text of the resolution http://schumer.senate.gov/SchumerWebsite/pressroom/record.cfm?id=291984

Yes, Maybe you're right Haut, I need to chill,,, I guess it's because I'm just not a sports fan of any type (my bad), I think it's a bit absurd the way people got carried away as to do this,,, almost like mob mentality. Yes, these guys are good!, Yes, they deserve recognition,,, but, come on a ticker tape parade? Let's rethink, and get real here, we have other more important issues on our plate as a country, why don't we channel some of that thinking, enegy, & money, into more important real issues. It just struck me as Ironic, & Sad, that we don't celebrate our military as much as our sports hero's, that's why I put it out there. Also, we as a country really need to get our priorities in order, to be able to survive. Just look around, check out our economy, our jobless rate, our divorce rate, illegitimate kids, immigration issues, our substance abuse rate, our social, moral, decay, greed, and etc. But an act of congress, & a ticker tape parade??? are we not encouraging, contributing, to a spoiled, jaded, society?

Anyway, I did watch the game, I enjoyed it, even though I was not too sure what was going on, I think the Giants did Great!, I was kind of surprised, as I thought the Patriots were a sure thing to pull it off, till near the end, I had my wife to explain some things to me as she is somewhat of a football fan, (after bringing up, & supporting, my stepson who was involved in it throughout high school.)

It is sad, and I hear what you are saying.

Truth is, that those who have not served, know someone that serves or has served, sacrificed a family member, or been emotionally affected in some way by the horrific loss of others beit by the hand of terrorists or our brothers and sisters that serve and protect our freedom each and everyday turn a blind eye to what is really going on in the world as they travel through life.

It's too painfull for most, I guess thats why they don't open their eyes more.

I doubt if there is anyone in this country, (legally), that does not know someone who served.....;)
If it (Super Bowl Parade) served the purpose of a little distraction from the ills of the world for a couple of hours, then it is OK by me......:)
It is a once a year event, that does no harm & brings a sense of community.....
We have Memorial Day & Veteran's Day for those who have sacrificed.....;):)

Re: I Don't Get It?!!!

All the small towns near me that are the ones with military units being sent over seas have a parade whenever one of the units comes home. You can't have a large parade for the people fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq because the fighting is not over yet.

I see nothing wrong with a parade for a sports team . But, I agree that a act of congress for a sports team is over kill.

Let me say thank you for everyone who has served. Be it in war or peace time. But, especially in war.

This is from the perspective of a NY GIANTS Fan, Superbowl attendee, US Military Academy Grad, Veteran, and current USN Reservist:

Superbowl celebration is not the root cause of the lack of celebration for those who serve and served.

The root cause is expressed plainly in your opening thread and responses. In every sentence you blame "THEY" "NEW YORK" "WE" "PEOPLE" etc... for what YOU feel to be lacking. What have YOU done to make a difference?

"Ask not what your country has done for you, but what you can do for your country". Those words were spoken nearly 50 yrs ago and apparently are still not heard.

Instead of pointing fingers, make a difference. I'm not advocating picking up a weapon if that's not in your makeup, but make an effort, any effort to fix what you find broken.

My children have picked out a soldier from a list provided in all our public schools. My daughter selected a PFC from Tenn and my son selected a Marine Cpl from Nebraska. Each month they put newspaper clippings, snacks, magazines,etc.. and a personal note in a box and send it off to them. Each note ends with a "Thank You." My children are 10 and 12 yrs old. They really enjoy the replies and feel like they're helping those who help them. The replies echoe what I'm saying in this reply.

If you want things to be different, then make a difference.

And... none of that changes anything whatsoever about my point... so your point is?
