Hi Guys. Pick up this little motor last week off of the second owner for $250. Which I think was alittle much but she purrred really nice so I took it. I just bid on the manual on ebay but got outbid in the last ten mins. Didn't think anyone else was watching and I thought it was in the bag until i went back to check it out. Anyways it does have a broken shifter lever and the past two guys were using visegrips for who knows how long. Well I had to try it out on the weekend so here is some pics of my quickfix and the boat on the water.I will be doing the work on the shifter with the help of you guys I hope . I check out the brp website and found the part number. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Re: 68 6hp johnson

Also the zodiac zoom 285 with myself and a gas tank with about 12L of fuel planed(took 15sec) and hit about 14mph which is good I think. But with two of us it hit 7mph(no plane) not much better than my 2.5yammy4t. Its just my yammy can't get me to plane by myself. These soft bottoms are hard to get on top with a small motor. Is this about what a 6hp should do ?

I'd say that's about right. I have a maintenance manual for a later 6hp. Its probably close enough to give you the info that you need to fix the broken shift handle. I am pretty busy tomorrow but give me a day or two and I'll scan the pertinent pages and post them here.

Re: 68 6hp johnson

I took a look at my 1974 6hp maintenance manual and didn't come up with much in the way of specific instructions for changing the shift lever. By looking at the parts explosion, it is obvious that the powerhead has to be removed to get at the portion of the shift assembly that is inside of the exhaust housing. I have done this a few times but not recently - my recollection is that it isn't hard at all.

See the parts manual and maintenance manual scans below for specifics. If you get all the required parts, you should be able to do the swap in a couple of hours.
