update shifting problems

Update: thanks to all you my boat shifts like a brandnew one:) thank you so much.
How ever I have another ? for all of you.
When I exselerate some times I here a cluck come from the outdrive, any ideas?
And again thanks for the help with the shifting problem.

personally.... i'd check for chickens.

if it is a clunk it is probably just the cluch ingaging
my mercruiser dose that

Are you putting it in gear, then accelerating?.....:confused:

Its a clunk,no chickens in there. LOL
Its a 89 OMC drive (W) a 2.3 ford 4 cyl.
I fixed the the shifting problem with everbodys help "THANK YOU" but there is still a clunk comming from the outdrive some times

Clunk when putting in gear is normal-anything else means a teardown.

My Mercruiser also clunks when engaging but before it engages, the drive gears chatter. Is this normal?

its normal if your shifting slow.....

but it's bad to shift slow.

shift faster.

There was a lot of corrosion around lower end of the transom cable.
Cleaned,adjusted and lubed everything it works with the greatest of ease:D
But now the ignition went south:mad:
Like that other feller said i/o i/o so off to work i go.

Do not mess with that lower shift cable. It must be replaced when it gets corroded.

If it gets bad enough or gets frayed internally and starts stretching it will pop you into or out of gear when you least want it.... and tear up the "dogs" in the process.
