thinking on this boat my mechanic has as a restoration project...a few pics in link below...

I have a question on the motor. It is an late 80's Johnson GT 150. My mechanic recently reworked the motor cause he was going to use this boat for his second boat.
He turned the motor into a mixer...he removed the VRO. He says that these older Johnson VRO's had some problems and were not the best gadgets man ever created ( some tech talk about springs and flaps failing)...so since the VRO was expensive, and that they were not known for reliability anyways, he just changed the motor to a mixer motor.
( not that I could not put VRO back in it he says, but he says he wouldn't bother)
MY QUESTIONS?
Is there any issues with running a mixer motor? alot of the smaller ones are mixers anyways...but on the larger motors does it matter????
Anyone ever heard of the older Johnson VRO's having issues?
( I trust my mechanic...but never hurts to ask)
surely by now replacement VRO's have been changed up to fix the older issues right? I mean if you by a new replacement...surely the tech issues have been worked out...right???
