1972-85hp rude. I want to replace impeller. The manual says it takes 675 lbs torque to take off the propeller nut is that right? Also is it a big job to change the impeller, How much disassembly do i have to do with the lower unit?

Re: replacing impeller?

Patrick, You do not need to remove the prop to replace the waterpump impeller. Also, I think the manual is off by a factor of 10 on that torque value. 67 ft-lbs is much more likely.

You will need a service manual to guide your work in replacing the impeller. You will need to disconnect the shift rod and drop the lower unit to get at the waterpump.

675 lbs of torque!! That thing would need a hopped up turbo diesel powered impact gun to get the nut off!

Could that be INCH/lbs? Still seems like a lot.

Re: replacing impeller?

The number that show in the torque chart is the force necessary to overcome reverse lock.

Use 120 inch pounds on the prop nut.

Re: replacing impeller?

I realize most dont, but I always take my prop off when changing the impeller. First, because I am normally alone, and dont feel like taking the chance of damaging my prop. Secondly, because I feel that is a good time to clean up any old fishing line wrapped around my prop shaft, and to grease the prop shaft splines.

Re: replacing impeller?

Thanks Chris, I was planning on doing that as I know nothing at all about this motor. I got it from a guy who got from another guy who said another guy said it used to run. Anyway I got it running and it sounds real good. I went and bought a impeller today and am going to replace it in a few days as soon as the weather here in St louis warms up. I want to be able to go fishing about next month and since I will be on the mississippi I do not want to break down.

Excuse me, was referring to changing the impeller, not the lu oil!

I edited my last post.
