I have a 3.0 mercruiser I/O engine. How do I know what size and pitch prop to buy and when I purchase it, is it ready to be installed or do I need to buy a hub kit or do anything else special other than put it on the same way the old one came off? Does anyone also know how to locate the model and year of the boat?

Re: prop installation

We'd base the prop off of the one you have now, by size and pitch then determine if it's in the right RPM range.
The hub is no problem as long as the prop you order is for that outdrive.
As for the year of the boat, depending on the age, there may be a serial number molded into the back on the transom, or possibly inside the engine compartment.

Re: prop installation

thanks oops. will the number on the transom tell what model boat it is? My prop looks like someone took a bite out of it. My motor is a mercruiser 3.0. So when shopping for a prop on here, just look for that motor type and the size prop that I get off the old one right? The prop should fit ok right?

Re: prop installation

we just need to determine the drive type, alpha, pre-alpha, alpha I, alpha II, etc...
Remove the prop nut and all washers, pull the prop and look at the forward portion of the inner hub as well the rear of the inner hub.
There may be numbers stamped between 2 of the blades...something like 48-17345-40a-19.

Hi, i looked at the motor. it is a mercruiser alpha one. there was a long number between the blades 48-832830A45-191. Then there was anohter set of number inside the center area. J14.5x19P. I looked at props on this site and saw a number of props that were alpha one 14.5x19 and different prices. How do i know which one i should buy. Will any of the matches fit? im just not sure which to buy.

Re: prop installation

If you are happy with the performance with the existing prop, even though it has a bite out of it, buy the same diameter and pitch. If it was an aluminum prop, replace it with an aluminum. Price is no different than buying a TV, VCR, a car, or a house. Two products are rarely identically priced. There are two basic types of prop construction when it comes to "fit". Some props have the hub as an integral part of the prop -- it simply slides onto the shaft and the nut is installed. Some props have what is called an "exchangeable hub system" which means the prop (the blade area) can be used on any engine or outdrive. However, there are separate pieces that slide into the prop to make it fit a specific engine or outdrive. Either type will perform the same and in the case of the exchangeable hub system, you need to buy the hub that fits your outdrive. You simply buy what you want.
