Im trying to take the powerhead off. There are 2 nuts holding it on from inside the cowling. The nuts are almost under the power head and an offset wrence wont reach. The manual gives me a part number for a special tool from johnson. The johnson dealership says they cant order that part. How do they remove those nuts?
Thanks in advance

Can't you get it with a short 1/2" open end wrench?

Johnson dealer Can't order the tool??? Or WON'T order it? I suspect the latter is the case. I don't know the current pricing structure, but in the distant past, there was no dealer discount on tools--they got charged full price plus sales tax. So, no profit, no order. Key the part number in at ishopmarine.com and see what comes up.

try a crows foot, its an open end that accepts a 3/8 extension OR the old time distributor wrench with the long handle and a box type wrench on the end.

I had to dig out my old distributor wrench to get at the nuts on my 35hp....also had to tighten the nuts back in a bit to get it off after loosening them. Mine is a box end and I believe they make an open end in the same size..S&K I think. A set of crows feet would have been sweet.

a 1/4" drive 1/2" flex socket will get in there with a long extention to remove and to tighten the nuts. As others said, certain distributor wrenches will work. Years ago, JC Whitney Co. had a dist. wrench that had a connector in the middle so you could swap ends, depending on the clearance needed to reach the nut or bolt.
