throttle control 1978 johnson 115hp

pulled throttle control off to recover the side parts that have vinly on them.put throttle control back on in same holes.now it will shift in forward,but when i pull back to put in rev,or netural it gets right before it should go in netural and stops.i watched cables at motor their move with control like they should.but like i saided when it gets back almost to netural the throttle lever stops & so do the cables at motor end..could i have bent a cable at control box end or could i have bent something esle.thanks for your help ahead of time.

Take the cable off at the engine again and see if you can shift the motor manually to all three positions. If you have the engine off, pull the plugs out and you can turn the prop and make it easier to check.

took cables off at motor can shift by hand no problems.put cable back on tried to shift with lever again same problem?

have someone turn the prop, while trying to shift, the clutch dog has to line up.

OK, so we know that your problem is in the cable somewhere. Is the control arm moving all the way back when you try to go in reverse?

no i can push lever forward fine.but then when i go to pull it back to netural ,it stop right before netural when the button under handle should click in.will not go past that point.this even happened when i had cables off motor end.

also i read on a post about someone with same problem.their said a little ball bearing fell out of someway.does this sound right if it is were is this little ball bearing suppose to be?

Yes, it sounds like the problem is in the control.

Do you have the control with the black leather arm rest on top, and a toggle switch for the choke under the ignition switch?

no toggle switch.it has a lever on side by throttle lever that you pull up to choke or rev up when not in gear.if you go on e-bay and look at item 130196885098 that is what my looks like.the only diffence is my has power tilt switch on side of throttle handle.thanks for all the help.

OK, the little ball bearing is in front of the detent spring and it can be moved and the spring can jam the arm. That is just one possible problem.

You will have to open the control to find the problem.

It's hard to relate anything to simply removing and reinstalling the control. I sort of suspect the shifter arm and rotary plate are worn. They have what I refer to as a "one-toothed" gear for lack of a better description. When excessivly worn they jam up. As said, you will have to get in there and looksee.

finally got to take throttle apart today.it was that little ball & spring thing were it rotates at.the ball pushed the arm up and jammed it.greased it all up put back together and it works like new.thank you all for you help.
