Re: 2008 honda bf 50

myself, I would look for a dealership that can actually service what they sell.
the F50 yamaha has been EFI since 2005. but most all modern engines seem to be reliable.
the biggest issue is technician training. you want to look on the wall for CURRENT certifications.
the yamaha master tech program is a good example of technical training.
no sense in having the latest technology when the servicing tech is still in the age of points and carburators.

i agree with you compleatly. my only problem now is i dont think there is a dealership here in malta that honestly* has technicians that are trained to service these new technical motors. reason being the damand for outboard moters is not that high and i dont think that any of the dealers here are going to bother with the expensise of properly training a technicain to fix the motors. than again i might be wrong. im not saying that they cant be fixed here but i have my doubts. i do know that the tohatsu dealer here is absolutly hopeless when it comes to parts an service. i dont know much about honda yet

I asked a dealer about the Honda 50 EFI the other day, and was told they wouldn't be available until 2009 or 2010. You might as well get the Tohatsu 50 TLDI if there's a dealer nearby. If the dealer sells TLDI, then they had to send a mechanic to Tohatsu school to get the certification. I believe this is a requirement for a dealer to be able to sell the TLDI motors.

I'm in my sixth year with a 90 TLDI, and it is a great motor.

That's true for the U.S., but not necessarily true for other countries. Tohatsu U.S. has the most restrictive policies of any outboard sold here, but Tohatsu Japan leaves policy up to the distributor for each country.

After a products innate reliability is taken into consideration, local technical support would be an issue. If Malta does not has a trained TLDI service tech there I would recommend skipping to a less sophisticated engine.

I am also new to the iboats forum ... but I do have a new 2008 Honda BF 50 HP 4 stroke, on a 13'.6" flats boat w/tunnel hull. The outboard is everything as advertised ... the problem for me was the first day on the water with my salesmen ... long story short the outboard overheated several time ... all the bells and whistles went off and appear to work to prevent any real damage ... rest assure everytime it overheated we would turn off the engine.

Tech showed up on site ... ran it ... few minutes later ... overheated again. The dealership hauled it away ... two days later ... they replaced the entire lower unit as recommended by Honda, so they say, and partially sealed the upper cooling water intake port, again as recommended by Honda for a tunnel hull boat. (Questionable logic to me, overheating so lets partially seal the water intake ports)??? Something to do with building up more water preassure vice sucking in air as a result of the tunnel hull on my boat, who knows.

Overall bad day on the water, but the dealership and Honda stood behind their product ... at no charge to me.

The only worry I have ... in reading the iboats forum, seems to be alot of overheating is going on with Honda outboards and a concern of Honda NOT backing up their end of the bargain "warranty" wise.

They say that the best day of a boat owner is the first day ... in my case it was the worst ... hopefully, the rest of days will be the best and I'll never have to sell.

I still think ... Honda Rules!!! (for now)

Re: 2008 honda bf 50

I bought the Honda bf 40:
1. Told the tohatsu 50 tldi could not be rope started if battery goes.
2. bf 40 still has carbies - about $2000 less than equivillants with fuel injection - 4/s, etechs, tldis.
3. One of the lightest
4. Been around the longest.
5. Dealer can service.
6. Quite and economical.
7. Have been told in o/bs carbies are still less complicated to work on than fuel injection.
However, minor bits have fallen off after 3 hrs of use (throttle linkages) - easily fixed but disappointing when its a Honda.
Now only time will tell if right choice has been made.
