I'm looking for a prop for a 1970 Johnson 4hp. None of the usual sources (including iboats) seems to have one. I have been watching Ebay to see if one might show up there but no luck so far. Anyone have any suggestions?

What size are you looking for? Are you happy with your current WOT RPM?

I would buy a prop for a boat/motor combination, not motor alone.

Re: 1970 Johnson 4hp Prop

There are only two props for this motor as far as I know - an 8" x 6.5" and an 8" x 5.5". I am going to swap my Johnson 6hp for this motor to use as a kicker on my 17.5 trihull because it is physically smaller and easier to deal with. The 5.5" pitch prop would probably be the better of the two but, at this point, I will take what I can get. I do have a usable prop for the time being but I would like to replace it because it is in marginal condition.

Thanks for the link but, as has been the case with other sellers I have seen, this company only carries props for 4hp engines manufactured in and after 1980.

It says they carry the 8x5.5 for 64 to 72. Were they all out?

Your right - I missed that. I also talked to my local OMC dealer today & he says he can get one for about $35.00.

I ran the motor on my boat today and it sounds like it isn't running up to a normal WOT. I also pulled the prop that was on it when I got home but there are no markings to indicate the pitch, so I have no idea what I am starting out with. I suppose I could take it to a prop shop and have them tell me the pitch but I need to buy a new prop anyway so 8" x 5-1/2" it is. I'll be ordering one on Monday.
