Am going to have to replace one of my motors soon. When I lived in the PA. / NJ. area we would go to delaware for big purchases as there is no sales tax. Made no sense for vehicles as your home state would charge tax when you registered it. Dont know if DEL. charged some kind of a use tax for big buck items like cars and boats, I have to assume the state would grab some revenue on these items. Question is, is there some kind of hidden tax on a motor purchased there? There is no registration of motors here in FL. , YET, as in S. CAROLINA so it would be worth my while to avoid the 6%.
Figure the motor registration in S. CAROLINA is more of a revenu grab more than a so called theft protection as sometimes said. Also, is there any new motors that still have carbs which I would prefer ? Up to around 60 hp. 2 stroke. thanks FRED

There are still some 50HP Mercs around. Yamaha still lists 50, 70, and 90 HP.

Re: DEL. sales tax ?

Don't know about your home state of Florida, but my state (Michigan) has something called a 'use tax'. From what I understand, most states with sales tax also have this. If you buy something out-of-state -- either in person, over the internet, or mail-order -- with either a lower or zero sales tax, you're supposed to declare it and pay up to your home state's sales tax.

So if I drive 50 miles south and buy something in Indiana (5% tax), I'm supposed to declare it to Michigan and pay the additional 1%, since Michigan has a 6% tax. Or if I order something over the 'net with no sales tax, I'm supposed to declare it and pay Michigan the full 6%.

Michigan seems to feel that most people don't do this, and thus it's missing out on a lot of sales tax / use tax revenue. Companies out of state cannot be compelled to report purchases shipped into Michigan. This is what the hoopla about 'internet taxes' is all about.

Assuming Florida has a similar setup, is there any way Florida can find out about your out-of-state purchase?

If you lived near the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, like we do, you'd get the "honor" of paying an additional .15% (.0015) use tax above and beyond the normal state sales tax to help fund a new stadium for the Minnesota Twins.

We're still grumbling about that legislative backstab...

If the Twins can't pay their own rent and other costs of doing business, why should taxpayers? Maybe they could have a cake sale.

Most confusing was in the mid-80's when we lived in Columbia MO.

There was a state sales tax, a county sales tax, AND a city sales tax. The combined rate went to 5 or six decimal points.

Amazing how many businesses sprouted up on the side street outside the city.
