When going thru a box of boating stuff I bought at an estate sale, I came across numerous expired date hand held smoke flares, SkyBlazer Arial Flares and Flare Pistol Cartridges... Some have been expired more than 10 years... What is the proper and safe way to dispose of them? If they were a year outdated, I would keep them as extra backups for the current boating season, then use them on the 4th... but 10 yeras old is to much to even think about messing with.. How to Dispose?

you could contact the none emergency line to the local police, they are explosives, or your hazardous disposal office.

Give you local Coast Guard or C.G. Auxiliary a ring. Once a year they collect and dispose of them here in the sunny south. I've never used their services so I can't give you any other particulars. If you're unable to locate a number for them, possibly your local Fire Department would be of some help.

If there is an old Olin flare gun with these items, you should know that it may be defective. Those guns had a problem with a nylon bushing in the hinge assembly, which prevented many from opening properly and, thus, preventing normal insertion of a flare into the gun. Olin was bought out by Orion Safety Products and if you send the old Olin gun to them, they will replace it for free.

I have keep all of mine. If your ever in the water and need them can not have too many. If your worried there not safe go to a army surplus store and buy one of the old ammo boxes. These boxes seal up tight.

It is very illegal to fire any red flares except for what they are intended for. White flares you can fire off but make sure you do it safely.

I would check with the local Police and Fire for a place to dispose of.

I ask the Coast Guard when we were boarded a couple of years back and they recommended we keep them.

You can also ship them back to the manufacturer for proper disposal... occasionally, some manufacturers may even send you something in return, a coupon or even a replacement... which is just a bonus.
