Hey guys i replaced everything from the whole water pump to the check valve for the vernatherm. All new but i am not getting water to the motor would it be possible that the key for the Impeller fell out of place during assemble and the shaft is just spinning and not turning the impeller.

Hard to "fall out", but are you positive it was put in correctly?

Did you ensure that the water tube slid into the impeller housing grommet smoothly? That is a trouble spot.

Did you flush the cooling system while the lu was down and vernatherm out?

hi lakester. I have a 1972 and a 1970 both 85hp rudes. A few days ago I changed the impeller on the 1972. To me it was a little tricky the wire gave me some trouble untill I figured out to tie a piece of fishing string before i pulled it out, then I was able to tie a guide wire on the string and pull the wire right back up. Now the tubes, that part was really tricky. i did it while it was still on my boat by myself with it tilded up. Also it did not help that I was sliding in mud. I had to tie a bungy cord on the lower end to stop it from sliding off as I lined up the tubes. I found out that if I put the plastic guides on the top part then I could get them in the holes on the bottom. I think I got it right but not sure as I am in st louis and I have to wait for it to warm up so I can start it and see if I got it right.

Best advice I have found is to have 2 people if at all possible. I myself find it amusing to use my wife (who is quite weak!) to hold the lu while I line up the water tube (taking my time of course ;) ) On some models it seems like no matter how strong you are, it is difficult to line up the impeller housing grommet with the water tube, and get it to slide in smooth, without knocking it aside by yourself. This is a common problem. It doesnt call for it, but I find if I put a little gasket sealing compound on the edges of the grommet where it contacts the impeller housing, then a little dish soap on the water tube, it helps it slide in without knocking it aside. I have personally bought 2 outboards that the previous owner said were overheating, and both times found the impeller housing grommet shoved into the impeller housing, restricting water flow.

As far as flushing, I feel it is good maintainence to flush the cooling system when you service the water pump and t stats. Remove 1 t stat, run compressed air or the garden hose up the water line to the t stat housing, then backflush it back down from the t stat housing to the water line. Replace that t stat, then do the same thing for the other t stat. (if applicable) This is also a good time to clean out the exhaust with some Deep Creep and ensure the water intake area is free of debris.

You should have two water tubes, one up, one down, and receptacles for each on the water pump housing. Look up on the tubes and see if the rubber guides are still there - they will help in replacing the unit.

Rubber guides? Do you mean the plastic tubes? If there were rubber guides there maybe I did not see them.

High trim I am afraid if I asked my woman to help me she would smash my fingers while I had them up there trying to line it up.

See my thumbnail for #78 and #91, which are the two water tube guides for the 1975 V4 waterpump.

You just pull them down, but not completely off the water tubes. Then set them atop the water pump housing fittings. As you push the gearcase up, they guide the tubes in. (Theoretically :)).
