Can you run Johnson 175 power head without lower end on motor ? I was going to put a garden hose up to water tube . I want to see if my mystery noise goes away with drive shaft and lower end not connected . Thanks for the input !

Re: Running power head without lower end on motor

I took an older washing maching hose and cut the end of one side. It might be six feet long. I took one end with the connector and connected it to the garden hose. The other end I put a little grease on the water intake tube and slid that hose up with a small radiator clamp I screw down. YOu can run your engine all day long this way and flush your engine without even starting it up.

You can do that, but it may be so loud, you may not be able to hear anything but the exhasut...... put a trash can full of water under the midsection (still use the hose)

I did that once with an old V4, 1959 75hp, it is easy to have a run away with almost no restriction on the exaust, so be careful about opening the throttle any while you are running it like that. Mine ran away and scared the crap out of me by the time I got it shut down.

Hey Benny I have a grumbling in the lower end I think . When I took the lower end off I notice a lot of marks on the drive shaft just above the water pump .

Were there any ground-up pieces of junk up in the hole the shaft came out of? Like parts from the lower main bearing housing? Could be your noise.

Re: Running power head without lower end on motor

i had some groveing in the pump area that didnt effect mine
do you have any side to side play at shaft at lower input ,
mine that bad it may be some thing in lower or as flaubam said lower bearing
how does powerhaed sound running the bottom bearing should sound off if its bad , if the sound goes away when you pull lower then at least you know its in lower
good luck bennyb

Re: Running power head without lower end on motor

That looks normal to me. All OMC's have wear in that area. I see you pulled the upper seal housing. How did the thrust bearing look?
Bolt that housing back down and put the gear in nuetral......... pull up and turn the driveshaft....feel any roughness? turn while putting side pressuer on the driveshaft....any roughness?

Spin the prop shaft while pulling up on the driveshaft.....any roughness?

Put it in forward (pull up on the shift shaft for forward). Have someone push in hard on the propshaft while you pull up and turn the driveshaft clockwise......any roughness in either shaft?

I sent you a PM a couple days ago..... you can still use it
