Depends on how good your engine stand is.

If your engine stand will take the weight there is no reason not to put it on

Re: putting mercruiser on engine stand

one more noob questions but....where do i attach the 4 stand bolts? on a traditional chevy with a bare block i would do it near the water pump after i took it off. is this an ideal place for this motor also? How much does a fully dressed mercruiser 5.7 weigh?

.

NO-NO-NO-NO. That is not how you do it, even on a car engine.
Remove the engine bellhousing and coupler and bolt it to the bellhousing bolt locations. NEVER on the front of the engine.
I'll Post a picture of where to mount it when I find one.

Assuming you are talking about an engine stand similar to the one pictured below,

Bolt the 4 support bolt to the holes on the back of the engine block circled in red in this picture.

Its advisable to also purchase a high quality stand with at least 4 casters. Dont need it flipping over ontop of your foot or even worse... you

Re: putting mercruiser on engine stand

Buy or rent a quality engine stand. As a general rule I try and stay away from anything made in China/India/Pakistan etc. if that piece of equipment could compromise anyones safety when it fails.... needless to say damaging your valuable property. Do not buy a cheap engine stand. The quality control issues with imported goods are enormous and frankly appalling. I refuse to be the next guy on the news who got hurt or killed because of an inferior product. We hear constantly about lead paint in toys... what about guys who are hurt using defective imported tools/equipment? I would rather work the engine on a wooden cradle than put it on a poor quality stand. I'm not a union activist but I see a lot of guys buying unsafe garbage because "I'm only going to use it once".
