I've got a 1983, 9.9 Johnson outboard. Can anyone tell me what the correct gap would be for the sparkplugs? Also, the push to stop button does not work. I have to choke the motor to stop it from running. Should I replace the stop button, or is there any way to fix the problem?

I'd watch ebay or other places and replace the kill button. I despise trying to pull start a motor after it has been killed by choking. It's much easier to restart after killing it with a switch.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out and try to find one on the net. I think I'll trying taking the old one off and take it apart to see what's inside. Maybe, I can give it a fix.

The kill switch appears to be p/n 0389856 and lists for about $40 from your dealer. You just need to short the two wires so you don't actually need the OEM part, but I personally prefer to keep them original and well maintained.

By shorting the wires, you mean if I cut them at the switch, I can shut it down by touching them together and it will run OK when I seperate them?

That is essentially all that the switch does.

Put a new switch on it. It's worth it. Those are good motors and will last a long time if you take care of it. But I like your idea of taking it apart. You might just be able to clean the contacts. But then again, it may be one of those factory sealed thingys.
