so i took off the lower unit from my '59 50 horse evinrude, and i noticed in the upper section of the lu where the water pump is, a lot of what smelled like gas and some other greasy muck. also, there seemed to be a lot of carbon deposits on the shift rod and the actual lower unit housing that seemed to be from exhaust. i dont think exhaust is supposed to be going in there? anyone know whats going on here?

That doesn't sound unusual. The exhaust contains oil and the motor has been greased in that area (lower bellcrank) for nearly 50 years. Exhaust needs to exit above and behind the prop. I forget the route it takes to get there, but it certainly comes pretty close to the drive and shift shafts...

this particular model doesnt have the the exhaust coming out of the prop area, it comes out of the midsection in its own exhaust tube. i thought this was the only place it came out maybe im wrong?

The midsection is just a spitter for cooling water teletale. Most of the exhaust comes out of that rectangular hole above and behind the prop. I think the exhaust is free to circulate around the driveshaft and shiftshaft. Do you have the 5" extension kit to make the motor a lonshaft? If so, there was a tube that went around the driveshaft to keep water away from it. it could be missing allowing the exhaust to get to the driveshaft.

no the drive shaft is fine, i think it does have the tube, just a little 4 inch tube right? i was looking at some diagrams and it appears that what i thought was the exhaust port was an exhaust relief boot or something like that, and the actual exhaust is down in that part of the motor. kind of strange, but i guess all is well with that issue

Nothing strange about it--that's the way it's been for eons. As for the muck and goo, get used to it. You would be shocked if you knew how much raw fuel is dumped down thru there. You will see it running out the various drain holes. It is absolutely normal.
