Leakage

Guys,

Ok, so I have no compression in one cylinder, the one with the arrow pointing at it. I went to get some Marvel Mystery Oil to put in it and see if I can get the "O" ring to stick to the wall. As I was pouring it into the cylinder, I noticed it started to leak out of the section right in the middle of the motor (second pic). This leads me to believe that there is a crack somewhere in the motor and that at this point, not sure what to do with it. Any advice on this, I think I am in over my head. The picture is of a 1978 Rude 115HP model # 115893C.

Thanks!

Re: Leakage

if you slopped oil in the lower pan, when pouring in the cylinder, it would drain out in that area, with the motor tilted.

Re: Leakage

Yeah, I just poured the oil in with it tilted up like that. It was the only one that leaked out down there, the others leaked down near the front of the motor. So, it's supposed to do that? There isn't a crack?

Re: Leakage

could be. if the compression does not come up. pull the head. if it's cracked you would have 0 or close to 0 compression.

Re: Leakage

Did you do compression check?
with the compression gauge, was the engine turning fast?

Pull all plugs and check compression with good charge on battery.

If it is just stuck rings the you can try some deep creep and then do a de-carb.

I have gotten cylinders with as low as 60lbs compression to increase drastically after a god decarb and replace head gasket torqued correctly.

you may also have a warped head if it over heated, if you pull the head lay it on a smooth flat surface, like a piece of glass and see if there is any warpage.

Re: Leakage

Yep, did a compression check with the gauge and all. I got 2 different mechanics to check as well. The top left had 110%, bottom left 0%, top right 90%, and the bottom right 40%. Both mechanics found the same information, the first told me to junk the motor cause it's blown. The second told me it can be fixed.

Not very knowledgable with this part of the motor. If I have to rebuild, can an average guy be able to do it himself?

Re: Leakage

I would pull the heads, just to see what the cylinders look like, and make a judgement from there.

as far as rebuild? you can find another power head or anotheer whole engine for less than a rebuild. I picked up a 76 115 rude for a song and a dance, replaced the head gasket, cleaned carbs and runs like a champ.

Pull the heads just to see what you have, then make your decision.

If the power head is shot and you decide to get another engine find one of the same model, rude or johny and you will have spare parts from your old engine. I have a 78 johnson and they are commen and alot of them around still in good shape.

Re: Leakage

I might be biting off more then I can chew here but here's what I think.

I have the same motor and same year you have, if that happened to me (sorry about your luck by the way, that's a bummer) but if that happened to me, I'd tear it down, find the problem (with lots of help from the fine people here) and if it does have a bad block or something, I'd go looking for something used either locally or on eBay, and rebuild it, I don't know much about them either, but what a way to gain experience with them, and if you get in trouble, I'm sure the people here could talk you through it as they have with me.

This has to be the best forum on the net for this sort of thing, and these people know their stuff, and have great advice.

If it were my motor, I'd be tearing it apart and fixing it, or looking for another power head. To me, there's nothing better then knowing your own motor, and there's not a better way to get to really know it then to rebuild it, then you know exactly what you have.

Just my thoughts, Stuart

Re: Leakage

Thanks, you guys have been extremely helpful. I'll keep you updated on what I find. The repair manual is coming in the mail so once I get that, I'll start on the motor.
