All right I am new to boats and new to this forum. I have an 87 Evinrude xp 150 that I rebuilt last summer? I am a certified automotive mechanic and I am very aware of the tight tolerances of theses motors. I also sought out professional help when needed and for the machining of the necessary components. That said I am having several problems I was hoping some of you may be able to help me with.

What is the exact starting procedure for the engine? I have a tough time getting it started without the doing the bad ?starter fluid? trick. Once it?s started it seems to restart ok for the rest of the day.

What is the idle supposed to be set at, once I get it running it idles low and rough, it sound like its loading up. I do have a manual but is for many different motors and I cannot seem to locate the exact spec for mine. Again I am coming from the automotive world where the service manuals are a little more specific.

I seem to have developed a fuel leak at the plastic tube used to split the fuel line for the three carbs. I have some clamps holding now as a temp repair but I do not know where to find the tube any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to iboats JT>

This thread should be of interest to you regarding the Cold Starting.

I believe the idle on that motor should be around 700 to 750 RPM under load in gear. If you are on the muffs in your driveway, it will be more like 1000 to 1100 RPM.

Regarding the manual, you need to get a factory OEM manual. They are specific to your exact outboard. Try Ebay or outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint. Do not get the Clymers or Seloc.

you can look up engine diagrams, part#s here follow prompts http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/?popup=true

starting procedure, pump primebulb till hard, raise fast idle lever all the way, turn key to on, press in, holding it in turn to start. should fire, release key, then you may have to push key in several times until it settles down.

as far as having to choke again, you could have and air leak in fuel line, allowing pressure to drop, bad check valve in the primer bulb, pressure dropping.

Thank you both, I found the parts and will order the correct shop manual. This forum is much better then the automotive ones I have dealt with in the past. I will try the new starting procedure and setting the idle as soon as it warms up a bit.
Thanks again

Stop using starting fluid. It has no lubricant in it. Remember - two strokes need oil and fuel mix. Since you rebuilt this engine, have you also done a link & sync? For that you need a factory manual. Ignore that procedure and you risk burning down a fresh engine. I also hope you rebuilt the carbs as well as they were probably responsible for whatever damage that brought about the rebuild. Again, ignore them and a lean condition will do in a fresh rebuild. Any parts for a Johnson/Evinrude engine can be obtained from a Johnson/Evinrude dealer.
