Ok, new to having a boat, Last summer I got an aluminum flat bottom boat with a 71' johnson outboard. She shifted into forward, neutral, and reverse easily. I just recently built a trailer for the boat, and so I took the engine and mounted on the boat while on the trailer. I checked the gear selector and she shifted just fine. I then took the ol grease gun and greased the fittings on the engine. And now she will only go to neutral and forward NO Reverse. There seems to be a whole lot of play in the selctor as well. So what do I do now?

Your linkage could well be worn, but check the motor mounts by twisting, or raising the engine while locked down. This was a common problem on the 9.5, and cause a linkage problem.

Click on the thumbnail below to enlarge it, then do this: look to the front of the flywheel, a little to starboard and you will see the linkage in the circle. That is an adjustable link. If you move the shift lever back and forth, you may find that the screw is loose and that it needs to be reset and tightened. The metal is very soft so don't break it.

Ok, Adding to the info. I have tried it in the driveway as well as on the water too. She will not slip into reverse on the water.
In the Driveway: Turning the prop while shifting,
In neutral it spins freely,
Pushing it into forward rear prop wont turn,
and when I turn the prop while keeping the gear selector handle pushed up into reverse it will finally catch.

Um, there doesn't sound like a problem there. When it is in gear in the driveway the prop will not turn as th engine must also turn. And as TD said you need to turn the prop (I usually turn the flywheel) to get it engage or disengage the gears.

It could well be a linkage adjustment, but drain the oil, and see what it looks like. Do you have a manual to adjust the shift linkage?

Fixed It Fellas! On that diagram its Bolt #74 and washer #73, The lock washer had almost no bite left to it and so when i greased it, I inadvertently greased what bite it did have away and so it would slide freely in the adjustable linkage assembly. I replaced the washer and tightened the bolt down proper and now she slides into her gears beautifully! Thanks for the help! Much appreciated!

As TD says, your email address as a username is not wise.
I suggest very strongly you re-join with a different username.
Thanks and welcome to iboats.

What manual part number did you pull the image from. Thanks.

The diagram is from the 1971 Johnson 9.5 Parts Catalog's "Exhaust Housing" diagram and parts list.

You can find it on the BRP site by clicking the parts diagram in the upper right corner and then navigating to your motor: http://shop.evinrude.com/
