Hi guys, new kid on the block here.I have been reading some of the prior posts & think I know the problem but want to run it by you guys to see if i'm headed in the right direction.I have a 1981 Seaswirl w/5.0 gm & omc 800 mech shift.the engine stalls when you shift into forward, could this be from a sticky/worn shift cable in the lower unit? The seloc book says if it shifts stiff @ the converter box with the prop turning it's the cable. How easy should the lever move by hand?thanks Dana

I believe its a hydro mechanical shift.
Thats what my 1981 Skiff Craft is GM5.0 800 stringer.
Does the shift controller at the engine have micro switches on it?

Re: Another OMC I/O pain

i think it's been converted as the outdrive has the zinc by the exhaust relief & the switch mounted on the plate is on top of the danger decal on the converter box & the shift arm on the box that holds the other switch isn't painted, just raw pot metal so it makes me think it was changed plus this year was in the cusp of the change over from what I have read any ideas? thanks dana

if it does'nt die when shifting into reverse, then i would say the cable is alright, sounds like a adjustment is needed. you really dont want to buy a new cable if not needed $$$$$$$$.....

Re: Another OMC I/O pain

Thanks for the info guys,I am going to open up the converter box next, any known problems in these units that I should be looking for?also the wire from the shift interupt that goes to the coil was off when I got the boat & am not sure which side -/+ it goes on. BTW it does not stall in reverse, slips right in. later Dana
