Hi- I have what I think is a Johnson 9.9HP long shaft kicker that I purchased well used maybe 20 years ago to use on my sailboat & dinghy. Long since sold the sailboat but hung on to the Johnson and the dingy, which ran well then but have been in storage since. Now I want to go through the motor and get it back running again if I can, but I have no clue the year and model of the unit.

The tag is gone from the bracket, and the only number I can find is on the aluminum engine "plug" : J3374752. She's pull start, 2 cylinder, two stroke, F/N/R, etc. The flywheel has two points setting locations marked.

Anyone help with year and model ?

Probably 1971 based on a range of Johnson serial numbers, but you need someone at a dealership to get in touch with BRP to be sure. That would make it a 9.5 though, so I can't help.

Hmm well its quite possible it isnt a 9.9. Are there any visual clues or good sites with photos of similar models of that vintage ? I dont mind doing a bit of research if I have a few breadcrumbs to follow...

Yup. The 9.5 hp or "pancake" motor has a very low and flat cowl. You can see a photo of it at the old OMC site.
