Hi, I am replacing all of the seals in a 1956 Sportwin 10hp is there anyone that has a diagram or instruction sheet on how to tear this down? I am replacing all the seals and the impeller because it hasn't been ran in about 6 years. Thanks in advance.

you need a service manual, outboardbooks.com well worth the money, rather than making a mistake. there is nothing on line.

another at the same time.

MrFisherman,
Are you replacing the seals because they leak or what? If they're not leaking I'd replace the impeller and go fishing. The lower units on the '56 are just like the '55's through '57's, if that helps. Do you need a parts diagram or a step by step guide to the seal removal and replacement?

I am replaceing the seals because they are leaking. I was a mechanic years ago on automobiles so I might be able to get by with a parts diagram but I would love a step by step instructions on how its done properly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Its pretty easy, really. There are a few o-rings and a couple oil seals. You need to pull the driveshaft and prop shaft seals with a seal puller. I use a cheap claw style puller. You must also replace the shift shaft seal which is a severe PITA. I have used two methods for this. Either tap the brass bushing that holds the o-ring in place, thread a bolt in it and pull it out or use a 5/16" (I think) metal rod grounded down to 1/4" and pound it out from the bottom. I prefer the rod method. When replacing the spaghetti seal that holds the skeg to the lower unit make sure the grove is clean and apply a little silicone or sealer to help it seal. Also leave a little (approx 1/8") of seal overhang on either end. Too much overhang and it will pop out when you try to put it together. Too little and it will leak.

It is also helpful to use a jig to hold the lower unit. Mine is made of a short piece of 2x6 with a 2" groove cut about 12" into it.

By the way, did you get a parts diagram yet? If not, holler.

Don't need to pull the powerhead on the 10 hp. That's for the 5.5 - 7.5 hp. There is a shift rod disconnect as seen in the parts diagram.
