Hi I have a 1972 evinrude 125 hp v4 starflite and its not getting spark . How do I go about testing the pulse pack on the back of the motor ? Motor turns over good an has great compression but no spark . I was told buy an omc dealer that it would cost 500.00 dollars to repair and I know that pulse pack does not cost that much . I am outboard orientated but not with v4 omc's . Just mercury outboards ... Hope some one can lead me in the right direction .... Thanks

in OMC land they call that the power pack.

but before that you should check the stator output.

there should be voltage going in the pack from the stator about 200 V check with peak reading voltage adapter and a multimeter.

the pulsar coil (trigger) has a low voltage going into the pack to close the SCR Silicone controled relay to release the 200 v stored in the pp to the ignition coil. about 200 v output.

so you if dont have any output, check all of the above, get yourself a manual they are worth the money.

hophely you have the CDI system otherwise forget my post.
could be points and condensers??????

I'd say the first thing you need to do if you plan to work on that thing yourself is buy a factory service manual.

In the first place, the 1972 does indeed have a "Pulse Pack". It is driven by the battery, not charge coils in the stator as newer motors are. It is also very sensitive to "screw-ups". That's why you need the manual and go about it by the proper steps.

Everybody wants to blame the mysterous "black box". Don't fall for that trap. It isn't bad till proven bad. For instance how do you know the distributor rotor isn't shorted? How do you know the anti-reverse ring isn't worn down to dust state from not being lubricated in the past 35 years? Your dealer is wanting to be paid for proper troubleshooting (rightfully). Trouble is, in today's market we all want an up-front price, which is impossible for him to know till he checks it out. He doesn't know if you need a pulse pack...or distributor cap...or timer base....or?. So he "CYA".

I have known seasoned mechanic's to have trouble with that system. As FR pointed out, there is more than one componet that can bring it to a stop. With the cost of componet's, plus shop time, I can see where the bill could hit $500. Stumbling around that engine in the dark without proper service information could also hit $500, and you could still be where you are at.

Thank You all for all the help . This motor is new to me an I have no clue of how to go about fixing it . I do have a service manual . Had to buy one since I have all mercury manuals . I can fix a merc but omc's to me are like trying to learn another langauge lol. I am going to do a few tests on it this saturday an hopefully I can come up with a diagnosis .
